SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, California A Lake Tahoe-area ski resort's expansion plans are under fire from conservationists who fear it cannot handle the growth.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort's plans to build a ridgetop restaurant and five new lifts would increase skier capacity by nearly three-thousand. On peak days, it already draws about eleven-thousand skiers.

The Friends of Kirkwood and the Foothill Conservancy question whether the popular resort located south of Tahoe can handle the influx of new skiers.

Kirkwood officials acknowledge the resort is going through "peak day growing pains," but say they're addressing the issues.

The U-S Forest Service has called Kirkwood's plan its "preferred alternative" in its environmental review.

The agency is accepting public comment on it through March sixth.
