The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard
The messageboard is now in read-only mode and no new posts or topics can be created. We will leave the messageboard up for historical purposes, but you will not be able to make new posts or comment on existing ones.
We have started a Discord server and hope that you all will join us on there. Technology has changed over the years and maintaining the messageboard has become somewhat of a pain in the butt and Discord offers many features for users, the main one being a very polished mobile app.

Congratulations -- what a great thing to do
I appreciate the links you put in your report -- obviously not a cheap skiing option but it sounds like you made it as affordable as possible: ain't hostels the bomb
very cool, hope I get to make a trip like that
I don't know how you ski -- but what would you compare the terrain to, or can it be compared at all?
so was Sparky's Bar open?

so was Sparky's Bar open?
The terrain open while I was there was all comparable to greens and blues out west, but they do not groom nearly as much here, so if you are only used to skiing groomers, it might be a little difficult. The Cervinia side had some fairly steep blues that in some places might have been called easy blacks.
The real wealth of places like Zermatt is their off piste. The best way to go is to hire a guide with a group of friends in the height of winter. There was some pretty sick terrain, but you would need a guide to be safe as there is a real threat of falling into a crevasse around the glaciers (case in point, I saw several areas closed near open trails with crevasse signs around them).
Unfortunately Sparky's Bar is only open during the high season in summer and winter, not spring and fall. We did have a few local beers in a restaurant downtown, so not all was lost
