No doubt you can easily spend that much (or more) if you go uber-luxury. But the west CAN be done a LOT cheaper if you're frugal and look for bargains, and if you're willing to forego the big fancy resorts. Our big family trip this year is going to Brian Head Utah (again) during spring break in March.
I've budgeted everything down to the penny (or pretty darn close) and it's going to cost us right at $5,500 for a family of four (and we did almost the exact same trip last March, so I'm very confident of my cost estimate). That $5.5K includes parking fees at the airport, round-trip non-stop airfare from ATL to LAS for four, a rental SUV, a hotel room in Vegas the night of arrival before we drive to B.H. on Sunday, 6 nights in a ski-in/ski-out condo, five days of skiing (Mon-Fri) for two adults and two kids, including all gear rentals and "get-better" lessons on day one for the kids, all food (mostly prepared in the condo), and gas for the SUV.
Now granted, Brian Head is a tiny resort by western standards and isn't known for "expert terrain". But with almost triple the acreage of Snowshoe and double the average annual snowfall, it's nothing to sneeze at. And the quality of the snow is fantastic (i.e. typical Utah powder).
Don't get me wrong, I loved Snowshoe the one time I spent a week there and would go back frequently if it were a closer drive (and even with the long drive, I do hope to get up there at least once this season). And trail reports like this one just make me want it sooner rather than later. :p

Great skiing with you. It was a lot of fun. Looking forward to getting back up next weekend. Need to get some natural snow going!

Looks like I've got to find new places out west! We've gone to Whistler the last 2 years and are going to Breck this year:
- Our coach flights to Vancouver cost more than that
- our hotel alone to Breck (this year) or Whistler (last two years) is more than that and we're not staying anywhere super fancy (nice 2BR ski in/ski out but nothing like the Four Seasons, or Fairmont).
- Our lift tickets at Breck and Whistler each trip have cost more than that.
Can you PM me with where you stayed at Solitude? Might be too late for this year but we'll plan for it next year. Granted our trips are normally 7 or 8 days, but if you're doing 5 days for $4K it shouldn't be too much more to add two more days...
