Been thinking about this question all day. Was at Sugar so confirmed my first reaction that it's the NC area that has the most in common with Mnut. But there are significant differences in the way things feel. For one, Mnut has high speed lifts and a separate area for advanced skiers at the top of the mountain. Not as big as the Highlands at Wintergreen, but definitely fewer beginners to dodge than at Sugar or Beech. The blue trails may be shorter, but they are wider. Especially if Big Red isn't running at Sugar. Mnut works hard to have Diamond Jim (one of the two black runs from the top) open at all times.

Last season Mnut changed to a flex ticket, 8-hour any day with the option of 4-hour mid-week. About the same price as Sugar for adults, but a little more expensive for juniors. Early season rates go until Dec. 20. Sugar started charging regular rates today for SugarFest.

Mnut does not close for late afternoon grooming.

Can't speak to park features. They just moved the easier park. The big park is between the ski slopes and the tubing. Looks impressive, but seems to be rarely used.

My 9yo daughter likes Mnut a lot. We are much more likely to drive 4 hours for a weekend there than 3 hours to ski at Sugar or Beech. Mnut doesn't seem to get as crowded.

Havent been to wintergreen in about 2 years or so but do have a comment about the lines at the highlands quad. midweek is fine for no lines, but on a weeekend i suggest saturday over sunday to avoid lines there. wintergreen season pass holders have access mon-fri and sun afternoon, so right about noon on sunday everyone and their mother shows up and the line starts to form. at least this is my experience in the past. however, with some of the weekend lines i've seen at beech/sugar, comparatively it's not too bad

It's 220 miles from my house to Mnut via Danville. How slow do you drive?

Usually 5 over, but I've never been north of Danville so I don't know how many small towns will slow me down.. I've really got to stop believing Google. Even going 70mph w/o stopping that's still a little over 3 hours. You'd have to be going 95 the whole way to make it in 2.5 hours. I can't use my radar detector in VA so I don't want to chance getting a ticket.

Never said 2.5, I said 4 to Mnut. Never go more than 10 over in VA. Even my father, the careful driver, got a ticket on US29 in VA years ago. US29 is 4-lane highway with by-passes all the way to I-66. Haven't had to deal with small town traffic lights for a couple decades.

I think I confused Mass for WG. I've taken US29 from Danville to Greensboro before.

To WG & teh Shoe - I like 86 in Hillsborough thru Yanceyville to 29 in Danville (for WG) & 58 to Martinsville 220 Clifton Forge 64 to White Sulphur Springs to 92 to 39 to Marlington to 219 (for teh Shoe).

or WG - I like 50 thru Oxford to 96 to 501 to 29 at Lynchburg, but this one works best with a stop at the inlaws off of 501... seems to take about the same time to WG or teh Shoe as well (from ENE Raleigh).

well, that's because you are going through oxford, US 501 is slooow up thru Virginia. Go back to 86 Danville 29 to get to WG and it won't be that long (ditch the inlaws).

i have not been to WG the last two years, maybe this year.

yeah, but set up base at the inlaws then less than 4 hrs to teh Shoe, less than 1.5 hrs to WG and hopefully a trip to M'nutin sometime this season... not to mention it's a good place to leave the dog...

i'm still thinking that ski & tee deal at WG sounds worth a try!
