The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard
The messageboard is now in read-only mode and no new posts or topics can be created. We will leave the messageboard up for historical purposes, but you will not be able to make new posts or comment on existing ones.
We have started a Discord server and hope that you all will join us on there. Technology has changed over the years and maintaining the messageboard has become somewhat of a pain in the butt and Discord offers many features for users, the main one being a very polished mobile app.

Thanks. We're planning on going to WG, WP, Cat, Sugar, Beech and Shoe this season since we've only been to App last year so any way to shorten the drive time is appreciated.
Google sends me down 40 and then up 77 to Shoe and it took forever the last time. Is the way you mentioned passable when it's been snowing out (my car is AWD if it matters)? I know the distance is much less, but the 1st way is almost all highway.

It a pretty smooth trip. My buddy has been going up there for years and that's the only way he goes. 92 is pretty flat, the worst stretch is 219 from Marlinton on up to the top. It's a pretty easy 6 hours from the Knightdale area with a stop or two. Might be able to push it in 5 hours exceeding 10 over with 1 short stop or no stops.

Might as well wait until after mid-Feb to check out WP. They will still have plenty of snow until the first week of March or so. The crowds are gone by then. Our first trip was a couple years ago. We drove up to WP Fri morning, skied and went tubing, then went on to SS for the first SkiSE Summit for the weekend.
WP has a special deal for tubing on the same day as skiing. Has one of the longer and steeper runs in the SE. My daughter loves tubing.
230 miles from Morrisville, but easy driving since pretty much all Interstate highway. I allow 3.5 hours with a gas stop in VA.

That route you described is about 315 miles from me which is about 87 miles shorter than taking 40 and 77. It looks like there's a slightly shorter route taking this route at only 283 miles. But, is the route you mentioned a smoother ride? My GF gets carsick fairly easily so I try to keep the twisties to a minimum even though they're my favorite part of the trip

We're going to try and goto WP during the week in Jan. and both of us getting lessons so we can take advantage of Shoe when we go in Feb. Thanks for the help BTW.

I bet you would only average 45 mph on the "short route." Stick with NCSUKing's directions.

You DON'T want to be on 39 that far before 92!!! If your girl gets sick, that part of the trip will be MISERABLE!!! The VA part of 39 is steep & curvy from what I recall... and like marzski said, you probably wouldn't avg 45 mph...

Gotcha, I'll do your route at 315 miles. As much as I like the twisties, I won't like them with her in the car.
