Thanks for great pics and the TR.

I almost went there last year but just was not sure if it would be that great. From Nashville this place is about the same distance as going to the NC resorts. Might make for a pleasant mid week trip for me.

Just curious for those that have been would you rather go to PN over say NC if it was the same distance? What are the Pros and Cons?

I'll probably take some flack for this...I would rather go to PN.

PROS:

When you look at the whole picture, the ease of access, layout, parking, is much better. Sure, you can find steeper terrain in NC, but overall I think that PN is nicer.

PN has at least 2 trails through the trees that are pretty darn tough and a couple of mogul runs that are pretty good. They have 2 terrain parks. The advanced one has two jump hills like nothing I've seen in NC. They also have the nicest layout for beginners I've ever seen. Three magic carpet lifts take them up very mild slopes and a chair lift takes them up a fairly mild hill.

The layout of the trails are also very good. In NC many resorts funnel everyone into a common area. Sugar is a good example of this. The trails and lifts at PN are spread across the mountain so the crowd tends to be more dispersed.

Another interesting thing about PN is their "admission ticket". When you buy a lift ticket, it is time stamped and is good for 8 hours on the snow. So it doesn't matter when you get there, you get 8 hours. And that ticket is good for tubing as well. No need to purchase a tubing ticket...of course, that takes time away from skiing or boarding but its great if you have little kids.

CONS...they do not have a bar or serve any alcohol so it's BYOB! They do allow it on site, they just don't serve.

There are only a few hotels in the area. If you are going to stay overnight I would recommend checking their web site and using their recommended hotel ski and stay programs. I've stayed a number of times at the red roof in Florance, and it's a basic hotel but the discounts are pretty good and you can buy additional lift tickets at a discounted price if you stay at one of their participating hotels.

Agree w/ safeTmanEd! Plus it does not get near as icy! mountain size is kind of between beech and app. so not huge by any means but quite a few of the hotels have discounted lift tix. and not like $2 or $3 but more like $10-$15 discounts per ticket. We usually stay somewhere @ the Hebron, Ky exit. it's about 13 miles away still but it's all interstate mostly. And most of those hotels do the discounted lift tix.

Looks interesting. Is 4.5 hour from Knoxville about right?
