There is snow in WV . . . at Winterplace. Had a great time skiing in the warm weather with the girls this weekend. Hated to miss the SS summit, but got to squeeze in hiking and horseback riding at Pipestem State Park on Sat afternoon and spend less time on the road.

We skied Sat morning and evening, and Sun morning. Everything softened up well before 10am, even with the time change. Some lines were building when we left Sat around 11:30. No crowds when we got back at 5pm. Very few people around Sun morning even though some Boy Scout troops and their families were around.

Sat, March 7 - temps in the 60's

No one around before 9:00am

view in front of Mountain House, Plunge on far left

The way over from the main lodge. Tubing was pretty slow during the day.

Bumps on Turkey Chute. Was closed on Sun morning, all ice I guess.

Headed towards Snow Bowl

Top of Plunge. Woods Run if go right.

View of tubing and Mountain House from the top of Lift #3.

Lift #3 (triple)

Woods Run at 5pm

Sun, March 8 - 52 degrees at 8:30am, 70 before noon

Lift 3 cleared to load at 8:30, we got first chair

Snow Bowl on left, Drop Off on right

Turkey Chute still has plenty of snow.

bottom of Woods Run (left), Plunge, Nose Dive (right)

Woods Run

Drop Off, an easy black since so wide

Happy girls

They liked Drop Off, which was pretty much blue not black with the sun and heat. Loved Woods Run under the lights. By then things cooled down enough to make it just the right speed, fast enough to take without many turns even for Marz Jr.'s friend. Liked Snow Bowl too.

Indeed, your girls look very happy-- sorry you weren't at the summit but clearly you were not wasting time

Pipestem State Park was great. One of the reasons Winterplace is a reasonable place to go from Raleigh is being able to stay there if we go with friends. We stayed in a 2BR cottage. Pretty good deal for $100/night. About 40 min drive to Wplace, half 2-lane and half I-77. Works great if you bring food and use the kitchen. Next time we'll also bring a good frying pan and some large mugs for coffee (didn't need hot chocolate this trip ;) ). Nestled in the woods with private parking and a big deck with a view.

After lunch Sat we checked out the lookout tower near the park entrance. Easy to pick out the snow on top of Winterplace. It's in the center of the photo.

After a quick stop at the Nature Center, I went riding with Marz Jr while our friends went on a hike. The Nature Center is small but very well set up. Live turtles and snakes, hands-on fur and feathers, etc.

Trail rides are year round. $20 for an hour. We rode mostly in the woods. Went down towards the lake on Lake View trail. We'd been last June so wanted to work a ride into the weekend. But didn't expect to be able to be in short sleeves!

Heading out towards the woods

Back to the stable

I like riding as much as skiing. But my riding muscles are telling me today that they haven't been used much lately. :)

Thanks. It works out great that the Wplace lifts are mainly triples. So I can ride with the girls. They figured out pretty quickly how to jump up enough to get on without any help. Marz Jr needed help last season but has grown since then.

Being able to let the girls ski Snow Bowl and meet me after I did Plunge was nice. They had fun watching me through the trees on my one run down Turkey Chute. It was fine, but this weekend was more of a Woods Run kind of trip.
