What time of day would you be driving through northern Virginia? If you can time it to avoid the worst traffic time for DC/Baltimore then you could take I-83 north from Baltimore to get to I-81.

I use Google Maps to compare distances for alternate routes. Taken various routes over the years from Raleigh to Lake Placid. I like to take I-80 over to Stroudsburg and PA209 by the Delaware Water Gap to get to I-84 for a change of pace if I'm driving through during the day.
