I made it up to Cataloochee for opening day this year. It was a great day. Conditions were so-so, but it was great to just be able to get back on my skis. Crowds were thin and lift lines were short. The lifts were having trouble all day and stopped and started a lot. I go stuck for about 15 minutes once, but they were very apologetic about the whole affair.
One of the Ski Patrol said they would've opened to the top of the quad except they couldn't get any snow to stick at the base of the lift. Look for it to be open in the next few days.
They actually cut a new trail for the Terrain Park. They also have the handle tow installed. It's oddly shaped in that it has two small trails that form a v and end at the base of the handle tow.
They have a bunch of new rails and boxes ready to go in the new park. It looks like they really want to make this a decent park.
They were able to make snow all day. Not so good to ski through, but at least it will give us a good early season base.
To get to the double you had to jump over this ditch or pond skim through the muck at the base. It was a source of some great carnage all day.
Conditions wise, the snow was alright. They didn't have enough snow to groom last night, so it was pretty bulletproof in the morning, but by the afternoon it had loosened up a little. They expect to be able to groom for tomorrow. Also, there were a lot of holes in the snow from the snowmaking crew walking around, but like I said earlier, this was more about being on the snow than having perfect conditions.
