My dad and i drove up yesterday evening to ski cat. we stayed in maggie valley at the ramada limited. We were both surprised right off by how much snow there was everywhere. This morning we woke up to gray skies and snow showers
the roads in the valley had really bad black ice, but fie top road up the mtn was just wet and gravely from plows running over it
we reached the top to deep snow everywhere and the sun shining over the meadows like a light from God illuminating the goods.
i asked a parking lot attendant if the meadows would open and he said no. that was reallly annoying, when a resort in nc has the means and snow to open something like the meadows they need to be opened!!
so we headed to get tickets
and then rode up to the top
the snow looked great and alleycat and upper omi were both ungroomed which was really good to see, there were even some trees that were really fun and had some good untracked snow.
where i skied alleycat all day, had some great turns in there, no matter how brief, nearly had some face shots. thats why im glad i was on narrow skis
i can only imagine the goods this field held
the amazing perfect run that should have open but was not >:(

Trust me, they wanted to open them up, but the insurance company said no. Everyone that worked there that I talked to yesterday was really sad that they weren't allowed to open them up anymore.

upper omi was the best run on the mountain imo, good snow and some pow on the side before i tracked it all out, and good legit moguls on the rest of the run
ended up skiing this twice, just tough to get speed and make it anything that enjoyable
these woods were really fun. the snow was dense enough to make it ski base and edge friendly. it was loaded with burried rocks and logs, really fun to get air on and land in pow
the meadow run waiting to be skied...
then we were about ready to leave and a great opportunity presented itself. I made two runs down rogers run and it was great, heavy pretty much untracked snow (you cant see in the pic but at the bottom and right of rogers run its still steep and opened up into a completely untracked pow field). i wont say exactly how i got onto it in fear that patrol might blow it up just like they did to chad's gap, but it was waay to easy and quick.
deep snow, those are 46" poles, snow was almost halfway up them--you do the math.
slayed

Should have poached HMR near the end of the day.

pristine
some closing thoughts; cat bc looked great, too tired and packed up to ski it and hike back out, the hike was the main deal breaker, with an at setup it would have been fantastic.
good non-low angle pow

pretty sure that happened. there were police apparently in the old parking lot watching for any skiers so i didnt feel like risking the main run.

Your a bigger man than me. I thought about poaching it all day, but didn't want to lose my pass. Wish I had, though. It looked sweet.

I was there on Saturday from 9:30am to 8:30pm. Probably the longest skiing day I've ever had, but it was worth every second.
