K2slopesurfer and Imet up in Raleigh at 5am for the drive up to Beech mountain for the day.

Conditions looked great as we approached Boone with fresh snow on the ground and good time made. Being the first time She and I had met in person, we had lots to talk about, and missed the 105 turn. Opted for 194. But.... there was a closed road and a detour. No problem, weve got GPS. Whatever. The next 20 minutes were fun FUN. the gps kept trying to send us up random driveway looking roads. So with a unsure GPS and a spirit of adventure, we entered the small roads on the Backside of Beech, determined not to fail.

We entered by the dump center off 321. Little blue signs so we knew we were close

They all looked like this. But her Subaru handled the steep roads with no problem.

When we finally got up to the ridge top we discovered the Oz tunnel, and drove thru.

Since the Mexican cleaning the chairs on Oz lift wouldnt let us drive across the slope top,

We drove back down the mtn and to the parkinglot. 9am perfect arrival time

We were greeted by the snowplow guys who we had asked how to get down, they returned my Blackberry I dropped at the Oz tunnel. Thanks.

Great conditions with 3 inches of fresh powder.

Guns going, cold and clear. Great day on the slopes. No crowd, no wait.

Fun stuff on the sides of 4 to 6 inch powder on Southern star and Robbins run. Actually found some features to hop

The trip abruptly ended when Jess took a face plant over a roller on the lower trails. Short little hop with both of us hitting it at the same time. She landed a little forward and caught her front end and took it full force to the forehead/goggles.

Walked her out to the car and sat down a minute. It quickly became obvious that there was a problem when she couldnt remember the morning. I got ski patrol

Beech Mtn ski patrol, Gill, came out and assesed her. Quickly suggested the closest er at Cannon Hospital.

Great hospital, caring people. Just a concusion and discharged her about 4 hrs later.

Had a helmet and it probably made a difference dr said.

Glad she is doing ok today. She cant ski/board for 3 days the Dr said, so Monday K2?

Robbins has a roller at the bottom that if you're going fast and not prepared for the landing you can bust hard. I did just the other day. Helmets are CRUCIAL.

That thing is nuts... I think the first day I hit it was Dec 26 and whoa, did I have some fun on that thing. I should probably wear a helmet more often...

Good to know you're back up in three...

I've missed that turn before as well... a few of those alternate routes can get interesting, especially with snow cover! Glad you guys had great conditions while you were there & glad you made it back without too much excitement. Just goes to show you that going up with a ski buddy can come in handy!

Hey guys, happy for the good vibes. Thanks. I really am going to be ok. After a resurgance of symptoms, like vomiting and such, and a repeat CT at Wakemed... I left with anti nausea meds, percocet, and instructions that I cannot exercise for 3 days, and cannot have any sort of activity in which I could even slightly bump my head for 2-3 weeks after my symptoms subside to avoid, as he put it, sudden death. (That bit made Sherri cry.) Wake med has a concussion clinic and I will be checked out there.

So all told...

Ticket for beech for a day I cant really remember= $30

ER copays= $150 each

New Helmet= $70

Meeting a new buddy I can actually trust with my life= priceless.

Thanks Doug.

P.S. Should have heard the CT tech at Wakemed when she asked if I had ever snowboarded before and I told her I am a certified instructor... Thought she was gonna bust a gut.
