Since we had a unit reserved on resort, we headed up to Massanutten for a couple days of the Pres Day weekend in spite of the warm and windy weather. Plus Marz Jr. was set to give snowboarding a try on Saturday.
Mnut was empty in the mornings and late afternoons/evenings, per usual. No line for Lift 6 (DJ and Paradice) in any case. The conditions were okay, with complete side-to-side coverage but I think mashed potatoes is the description that fit the snow for most of the weekend. The wind was so strong on Sat that it slowed me down at the bottom on Paradice at one point. They had to cancel the planned fireworks. We didn't bother to ski on Sun morning knowing it would be frozen solid. Even by lunch time, there were icy patches on top of the mountain in spite of temps in the 40's. They did groom everything Sat night.
Empty slopes on Friday late afternoon
Southern Comfort lift has conveyor now, so both beginners lifts are less likely to stop
Black runs off Lift 6 are lit, as are all the slopes at Mnut
I was happy as usual with the teaching set up. Marz Jr. was in a group of 4 for first time boarders with an instructor and a young assistant. They went through all the Red skills and moved onto Orange skills, including taking a run off the Geronimo lift. The second magic carpet is twice as long as the original one (now for the little skiers) and that teaching slope is steeper so new boarders can get enough speed to learn more before having to deal with a chairlift. Marz Jr. found boarding fun, but also frustrating. She hasn't spent that much time sitting on the snow in years.
Slopesliders (9:30-2:00 ski/ride school for ages 4-12)
