long TR, part 2 -- Acadia

Pt. 2 -- Maine, Acadia to Quoddy Head



We drove up to Mount Desert Isle, aka Acadia -- lupines







I had no idea that the central part of Acadia National Paqrk is the island that is also most notable for Bar Harbor. It is the second oldest National Park but it is also kind of a wilderness disney land. Still there is a reason why the robber barons were drawn here and why it is still a national treasure.

























Not the eastern most point but with Cadillac and Sergeant MT. both at 1500 instant feet above sea level, it is where the sun first hits our country. The high parts have there own weird timberline, where it is all pink granite and rock driftwood left by receding glaciers



Also there are the cairns which are the iconic way of marking trails -- vastly over used here, they were cool at first then tiresome as hell, like really, you cannot discern this eternally trodden path?





The water on the ponds (lakes) is achingly clear. It also was on the coast







tidal pools at the end of the island











There's no sand for sand castles









Bar Island has a spit of land that connects it to Bar Harbor during low tide -- I liked it

Tides here are huge and crossing a small bridge in highlighted it.

Beginning with this, I have never had a purer sense of place and nature then that morning, I'll just stack up some pictures w/out commentary

We drove on north and east to Quoddy Head, eastern most point in the US



















We were tired, I wish we had walked down to the shore



With Binoculars I spotted a huge male seal basking on rocks who had kindly chosen to exactly match his hide. I asked the rangers about him and they said "Floyd! he's back." apparently he's a seasonal fixture









We drove through miles of blueberry heath and silt-like gravel waste and into the white mountains --

KD -- apparently this thing will at least go three installments, Mt. Washington is next



I wish I was a better photographer and had some sort of decent lens. The remote parts of Acadia are beautiful like Zion -- incomprehensible

not too shabby of a trip, david. acadia is a target for anyone outdoor minded. what kind of lodging did you do and find any good music joints ?

we mostly stayed in little one room kitchenette cottages. No Music or night life stuff to speak of, every morning we were basically shooting the dice where to go next.
