Time for the annual ski trip with the wife. Fortunately (unfortunately) we've been busy with W O R K so this was about the best we could do for timing. Pretty good snow for the previous week but of course a few days before our trip rain & warm temps hit. No worries, we're not in the office Spent the weekend with the inlaws in VA & dropped off our new pup for them to play with all week... 13 week old golden/lab, so they should have lots of fun...
Hard to pass right by Wintergreen when it's 100% open but figured it'd be one place we'd come back to on a better day. Headed on up to Massanutten for Monday Night Madness & $18 lifties. It was a cool 60*F. Still fairly firm. Good warm up laps for the week ahead.
Grabbed some grub at Hank's Smokehouse, decent ribs, ok bbq. & dirtbagged it at the motel 6.
Headed to Timberline in the morning. Nice little ~2hr drive on 33 from Harrisonburg. Got caught behind a few school buses... poor kids stuck inside on such & nice day. 33's not a bad route but definitely better during the day light hours & w/o snow cover. One place has a sign that indicates high rate of motorcycle crash for the next 4 miles... good thing we left the bike at home.
Seneca Rocks:
Timberline is fun, but much better with fresh snow. Day before thaw & freezing over night weren't the best of conditions but still a good time. Softened a little after lunch. Trees & moguls were still frozen most of the day & not really worth a look.
Thunder Draft under the lift. Saw a few give it a try. Looked & sounded frozen:
Silver Streak, fun & fast:
The Drop, fun, fast & groomed:
Off the Wall => frozen, not groomed, not worth the energy, but some old lady was slaying it so I gave it a try:
Stayed at the Canaan Valley Conference Center. Should be nice next season when the new buildings are finished. Still not bad for less than $100 & includes next days lifties for 2. Grubbed at Big John's Family Fixins, not bad, reasonably priced.
Called for snow all night but didn't really start until 10am. Snowed pretty good all day. Canaan was already in a little better shape since it didn't get below freezing the nice before & the grooming was pretty good. Most of the advanced terrain & tree areas were closed for lack of snow or still frozen from previous day.
Gravity:
Of course it always snows when we need to leave:
The roads were in fairly decent shape though. ~2hrs from Canaan to Snowshoe on 33 through Elkins. Road up to Snowshoe was a little dicy & check-in was fun in the puking snow, but hopefully the next few days will be good.
