Spending the long holiday weekend at Massnutten. Only a few pics, which I'm too pooped to deal with right now after skiing all day in frigid temps. The high on the mountain was about 21 degrees. Snow guns were on all night on the lower slopes, and all day on the blacks and a few blue slopes (Pacesetter, Lower MAKattack) that needed more coverage. They successfully covered up almost all the ice from yesterday.
Friday we got a head start since Marz Jr. and our friend's kids didn't have school. Spring skiing in the mid-50's. No crowds yet. Good for the beginners in our group.
Saturday the temps were going down all day long. So the slush from Friday froze up. By late afternoon, there were big ice patches on every green and blue slope. Marz Jr. watched someone slide down a long way on MACattack from the top of Pacesetting (easy blue). I was skiing with the 6yo off mid-station but decided that Geromino was safer for the last few runs of the day.
Sat we skied from 9:00-12:00, then hung out at the condo until close to 4pm. We avoided the worst of the lift lines. There were a few groups of middle school or high school students who came in big buses who were heading out when we drove up for the night session.

Sounds like not the best day you've been having up there compared to the good conditions you've enjoyed there lately. Worth it still I hope. But slush, refreeze and plummeting temps can be a nasty combination -- good luck w/ it I hope you can have some fun

This season has been up and down at Mnut, just like everywhere else in the SE. Coming for a 4-day weekend was about being with friends, not chasing good conditions. My friend and her two kids (age 4 and 6) had a great time, even in the frigid temps today. The boy will be on Lift 6 next season for sure. Several friends are coming for a day trip on Monday.
Once it got cold last night, there was plenty of snowmaking to cover up the ice so today conditions were pretty good if you could stay warm enough. I did another Senior Clinic. So spent 2 hours non-stop off Lift 5. Got a few good pointers. We were mostly on the bottom half of MAKattack with no ice at all. Does not have big bumps again yet, but still quite good for improving technique. The bonus was that my instructor is also ACL-deficient . . . and not skiing with a brace.

Quite a variety on weather. Friday afternoon it was really warm when we hit the slopes around 3pm. Then it started raining a little at 5:30. My friends are completely hooked, so a little rain didn't discourage them. We headed out again around 6:00 for a few more runs. As we rode up the lift, it started snowing!. Pretty fun to see the snow in the lights. Only lasted about 20 min. There was snow to be seen on the ridge the next morning, but not much more than an inch. None in the valley where we are staying this time.
Sat, Feb. 16 after being in 50's the day or two before
Ski school for kids was at full capacity, per usual for a holiday weekend
Sun, Feb. 17, back to looking like winter
Adaptive skiers were out in spite of the cold temps in the low 20's
9:30am Sat, Pacesetter (easy blue) was deserted
Sun the high temp was 21 on the mountain

Mnut was splendid today! Since the high was in the low 20's yesterday, there was no new ice anywhere. Plenty of snowmaking over night. Warmed up to low 40's by mid-day. Great snow conditions on all runs. The bonus was that relatively few people went skiing. My guess is that some people decided to not bother thinking that it would be as cold as it was on Sun.
Had friends who came for a day trip. We had a ball until early afternoon. Marz Jr. did the bumps on MAKattack for the first time. She decided bumps are both annoying and fun.
