My wife is a great person but does not like cold, snow, or any of the BS associated with skiing, but she loves to hike, travel and see beautiful places... so I really wanted her to see the Canaan valley for the first time and as a result I saw some new things too

Finally went to Blackwater falls, and a smaller fall. May I say how amazing the WV State Park system is, .. Pipetsem, Blackwater, Bluestone, Canaan Valley, .. these are ones I have seen and they are all beautiful, well run, exceptionally nice -- real gems





















Hiked up the path to Seneca rocks and climbed a little extra to the top -- Seneca rocks is like the petrified spine of a mountain that crumbled away.



























We barely got into the Dolly Sods Wilderness, I really didn't know the scale of the place, we only got into it's edge













----and we went to Seneca Caverns

















---We stayed in Thomas the first two nights at a really crappy place but we saw an excellent show at Purple Fiddle sat. night ( Seth Walker ) stayed somewhere nicer on Sunday. Sirriannis is good food

It is so neat to see some of these area in the off season. gives me some perspective.

Some of those woods have a 1500' drop, with well spaced trees, but it ends in a steep creek bed -- I can't wait to make some new mistakes

I have vacationed with 4 generations of family in Canaan Valley for 33 consecutive summers. Ironically (as a skier) I have only been to Canaan Valley 2 times in the winter. (Most of my youth skiing was in PA and VA and as an adult my skiing has mostly been in NC and Southern WV).



I love CV and Tucker County. It’s my home away from home. And even after 33 years I always find something new to see or do every time I go there. Last summer I went clay shooting at the brand new range at CV State Park. This summer I went canoeing on the Cheat River, a first for me. My youngest daughter has her first trail ride in CV this year. While the state parks have always been great and always will, the CV Wildlife Refuge has grown substantially over the past 10-15 years. They have lots of great hiking trails and wildlife areas. No amenities, but great way to experience the beauty of CV. Dolly Sods is much the same. No amenities or services, but great scenery and a vast wilderness to explore. It really feels like another country up on the sods.



As for accommodations, if you aren’t staying in the state park lodges, consider renting a house in the valley for a weekend or week. Rates in the summer are much lower than the winter. We usually rent in the gated portion of Timberline. There are also very nice condos throughout the valley.



And yes the live music at PF is always fun and Sirriannis has great food.

Agree on all points-- I need to follow up with more of the summer activities you talk about. Glad I made it there in the "off-season"
