Ski Cherokee in Linden, Virginia, was a new ski area undertaking by real estate developer Gene Adkins. With an initial investment of $1 million, the area had five trails and two additional proposed trails. With names like Cherokee, Seminole, Iroqouis, Apache, and Pawnee, the trails paid homage to our Native American predecessors.
Ski Cherokee had 1,100 vertical feet of terrain, offering a gentle upper hill and a lower hill with more advanced terrain. The Ski Cherokee lodge was located about halfway up the mountain. Three lifts were installed in 1989 and carried skiers up the mountain. There two quads and one triple, all of which were Riblet Chairlifts.
Following the demise of Ski Cherokee, the fixed grip Riblet quad was dismantled and transported to Crotched Mountain Ski and Ride Area in New Hampshire and is now used to service a beginner slope and terrain park.
The ski area didn’t last more than two years as fog, rain, insufficient water supply and lack of funding all contributed to its demise.
