Ski Southeast Messageboard

I was driving to Snowshoe and passed the town of Marlinton,stopped at a gas station right before the road(either 219 or 92)heads up a big mountain.In the gas station parking lot there was a good view of a valley to the west and w/it was a mountain that looked to have abandoned ski trails on it.It wasn't just a powerline,there were several trail like clearings carving up the mountain.Does anybody know about this area?

That link probably referred to ski slopes that were cut near Woodrow, WV, for a project that never opened. You can also find it on satellite views pretty easily. I would be surprised you could see it from 219, but if so probably from near the Marlinton Motor Inn. I don't think you would ever see it from 92. Maybe you are looking at something else ?

Back in the day, putting lost ski areas on milk cartons had some success in finding them. Just sayin',

Nope, that is Tory Mountain.



If you google earth Woodrow, WV it is just to the west.



From a WV skiing history:



"The 1980s was a pivotal decade for the ski industry in West Virginia. In the early 1980s, downhill ski resorts Silver Creek, Timberline and Winterplace opened, and cross-country specialists Elk River and White Grass opened. Snowshoe and Canaan Valley expanded with trails, slopes and lifts. There were plans to open two downhill ski areas that never made it past the development stages: Tory Mountain in Randolph County, and later, The Laurel Creek Club in Pocahontas County."

I went in search of back roads and laurel creek two weeks ago, and found only the former. lots of it. looking at the maps now again i can see it would be difficult to spot. All you have to do is turn on Woodrow road right next to the Marlinton inn, and keep on going. When you get to Woodrow proper, you have just barely gone too far. It should be on your left, to the south, on a Laurel Creek Club Road. Good luck !

The property is currently owned by Beckwith Lumber Company, I tried about 10 years ago to get permission to hike it but was given a rude and thundering NO!
