Spent Thanksgiving with my brother-in-law and family; had a great time, good company and all the requisite food. Every time I visit I try to get up early most mornings to beat the crowds and enjoy the monuments

First morning the Washington Monument was striking in the morning fog

I backtracked and used the Jefferson memorial to frame it

And I took a series to photostitch looking over the tidal basin

The next morning I went to the National Cathedral; where I've not been before, and found Washington again

The National Cathedral is an exceptional repository of American craftsmanship -- I think it is largely overlooked -- heres some stained glass

My Brother-in-law is a marine stationed at the Pentagon for now, and Roosevelt Island is part of his jogging circuit -- another overlooked gem

Finally I went to the galleries -- The National Portrait/Museum of American Art -- only to discover that some artistic type had already stolen my idea to use the Washington Monument as a unifying feature -- evil *******

Thanksgiving is incomplete without the Puritan

FINALLY -- how bout some nice pictures of mountains

and a little bit of cold

I've traveled the world a little-- and I have to say that DC has the greatest free access to quality landmark museums --and the art galleries are absolutely exceptional

I liked that too -- I should have made it a little larger , can't wait to have some photostitch fun on the slopes

Here are two other pictures I liked, the crystal installation was at the Renwick a very cool small gallery that is part of the Smithsonian, the detail was spectacular

They let you take pictures of photographs? Hmmm.

Photoraphy was allowed everywhere except in special exhibitions and new arrivals --I don't think that fell into either category -- I certainly tried to keep my eyes open for any sign or prohibition

Interestingly flash is no longer an issue, no signs any longer specify no flash -- that policy seems increasingly the norm --- I still think a flash in a gallery is obnoxious and distracting so I try to always keep it off
