So me, skiing rules and our friend who used to be on here as ATLjibsteeze, went up to beech last week for the best trip we've had in NC. (sorry if a lot of the photos are flat. Visibility and flat light conditions weren't favorable to pics, but everything was so good that I took about 300. Its obvious which ones i took time to photoshop a little bit)
3 am Wednesday: Woke up to drive. left by 3:30. I was on 2 hours of sleep from watching ga tech's terrible loss in the orange bowl (fml).
You know you wake up early when you see the sunrise on 221 less than an hour from beech
banner elk reminded me more of co or other places, than nc. I havent seen as much snow in NC in a long time.

They got prob around 5 in of new snow. Robbins and southern star were good on the sides. It was a little icy in the center. The park was a complete ice rink...possibly the iciest i've seen.
yes...skis with 104mm underfoot is a little overkill for 5 inches of new snow. That doesnt mean they werent fun
Side note: my friend had his new k2 kung fujas with the marker schizzo - griffin binding set up. Dont use the schizzo or however its spelled. on the second run of the day, on a routine 180, the schizzo thing just completely broke. Luckily, I always bring extra skis and we both have the same boot size and sole length.
white lightning ended up opening later in the day
the snow there was good. Especially the lower part, where it collected nicely.
we skied everywhere where there was new snow, especially under the lift and everywhere it looked good.
Randomly, on skiers right of lower white lightning, there was evidence of a small slide. Unfortunately, the lift was so terrible when I took pics, that you cant tell much, but you could see that there was about a 16 in crown that went all the way through the entire snowpack to the base. The crown and the sides of the slide were somewhat easy to see, but new snow that collected and people skiing over it made it slightly more difficult.

we ended up ducking ropes and skiing the upper part of the number 6 lift line for about 2 hours. It was pretty sick, light, boot deep pow. We would either ski to those rocks that are on the side of upper white lightning, or go further down the liftline into a sort of hidden run that was good.
Unfortunately, we eventually got caught by ski patrol and they weren't happy. Luckily they let us stay and didnt clip our tickets. We only skied 1 or so runs after since everything was tracked, it was cold, and my brake on my vcts broke. So the end of day 1 at beech.

friday jan 9. this day was sick and the best day of skiing I've ever had in NC

I ******* hate this truck guy. Pulled right in front of us and proceeded to drive 5-10 miles/hour from halfway up beech mtn rd to the entrance of the ski area.

Its the first time in a long time I wish they hadnt had the snowmakers on. They destroyed a lot of good snow.
The run of the day (besides the last one, ill get to that later), was southern star. It had fresh snow well until around 12 pm or later. It was us 3 and maybe only 10-20 people that actually lapped it, so it stayed pretty nice. Boot deep everywhere since Beech didnt groom. So thanks to beech for that. Robbins was great too.

my tracks bottom center made around 12 30, pretty late in the day. I think the cold drove a lot of people away. I dont think it got up to 0 while we were there.
we ended up skiing the lower part of the no 6 liftline. By far the best run I've ever had in nc. pretty much knee deep the entire way. Basically untracked. Tons of drops, moderately steep and narrow(for nc). skiing rules skied it first, and then told us how sick it was and we all ended up skiing it.

this is a great tr......lots of pics. usually the vehicle moving at a snails pace on beech mtn is a van with florida plates. this drives me crazy too. please pull over & let others pass!!

great tr, i got some pics to add as well. next time we need make atljib take pics too. the trip was honestly the best skiing ive done in nc. The snow under the lower lift 6 line was the best snow ive skied in my life, faceshots were had. Huge kudos to beech for NOT grooming. The skiing was great but the weather was not. On friday it was mostly poor vis and whiteout, snowing, windy with snowguns on, and the high temp at the summit did not get above zero. lower white lightning was fantastic as well, the lower steep section on skiers right was boot top pow and the entire lower section of white light was untracked boot deep pow. I'm not going to make it west this year and i have been extremely happy with the snow ive skied in nc this season starting with catt on the 21st of december and my run down the meadows to my most recent run under lift 6.
