The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard

The messageboard is now in read-only mode and no new posts or topics can be created. We will leave the messageboard up for historical purposes, but you will not be able to make new posts or comment on existing ones.

We have started a Discord server and hope that you all will join us on there. Technology has changed over the years and maintaining the messageboard has become somewhat of a pain in the butt and Discord offers many features for users, the main one being a very polished mobile app.

Took my kids up for a short trip to go tubing at Hawksnest and to go to Beech early this week.



First for Hawksnest:

First time we have been there. They had about 10 tubing runs open. There were a good number of people there but things kept moving pretty well. Occasionally the lifts would get stuck and you would have to start hiking. A couple of the runs were a little brown in places but the long steep runs on the left side were really fast toward the end of our session. We had a great time tubing and were disappointed in what Hawksnest could be if it wasn't for the city of Seven Devils. :mad:



Now for Beech:

We moved the trip forward with the kids out of school due to the weather conditions that were coming later this week. Basically we ended up skiing on 12/20 instead of 12/22. Traded a partly cloudy 40 degree day for a 50s heavy rain day. Things worked out well in that regard.



Trails that were open were minimal but hey we knew that ahead of time so it was what it was. Upper Shawneehaw, Lower Shawneehaw, Crossover, Freestyle, and Play Yard were open. I was really suprised at how good the conditions were given Beech basically had last weekend to start making snow. There was really good coverage except for the steeper part of Lower Shawneehaw right before Crossover. The coverage there was thinning out as the day wore on but we were able to avoid the browned area.



Kids and Dad had a great time getting away from the hassle and having some good quality time together. We stayed at Pinnacle Inn which was perfect for us. Maybe we can get back up there this year! Also rented skis from Beech Meadows which did a great job also.



My first video of the last run coming down on Freestyle. My older son starts going too fast and whipes out about 20 seconds in and my younger son does a circle around him. :) Good times!

I almost posted a half a page on why Hawks is gone. I think I will leave it alone. It was my home and it is gone. RIP Hawksnest Ski Resort.

Sorry OEC. I was curious earlier and took a look at some articles about Hawksnest. Maybe it will come back in 5-10 years. An absolute shame for a really nice mountain with what seemed like a good plan. I hope the people that stood in the way of the expansion have lost their collective @$$es.
