Now, if I could only figure out how to turn and stop...[/quote]
Is that different on XC skis? I have never done it.

SWIX- they plow the auto road up to carver's gap i'm told. People live back there, at least part way up. Carver's Gap is where you can access Jane Bald and the other grassy spots. I didn't drive all the way up last week b/c it was still snowing pretty good and I was by myself. I didn't know when the next plow would come by. I suppose if you hit it the day after the storm instead of the day of you'd be alright. If it's closed, just ski from there.
Anybody ski the blue ridge parkway?
g8erhater- yeah it's different. The skis are skinny. It's extra hard if you've been downhilling all morning. I started to figure out how to make small turns by edging. If it is steeper I guess you should be teleskiing.
Any tips on stopping?

peter - how did the snowboarder get from the main road over to jane bald - is there a road or just a trail, i can't remember. now that you are in dc you might be checking out whitegrass and dolly sods.
pagamony,
i misspoke. they were snowboarding on Round Bald, which is the first bald on the ridge hiking west from Carvers Gap. Jane Bald is the next one over and then, grassy ridge. in the photo above, jane bald is the visible one, while grassy ridge is in the clouds in the distance.
anyways, its all accessible via the appalachian trail, which crosses the main road at carvers gap
and yes, i really would like to get over to Whitegrass this season. they have tele rentals and lessons at a good price. i have no excuse.
