The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard
The messageboard is now in read-only mode and no new posts or topics can be created. We will leave the messageboard up for historical purposes, but you will not be able to make new posts or comment on existing ones.
We have started a Discord server and hope that you all will join us on there. Technology has changed over the years and maintaining the messageboard has become somewhat of a pain in the butt and Discord offers many features for users, the main one being a very polished mobile app.

As I mentioned in "Storm Totals", the snow cover is deceptive if the area is protected from the wind. Look at the pictures of me on the balds...there's really not much snow cover (you can see the gravel of the trail in some pictures and grass through the snow in many). However, if you could find an area with some vertical in the trees...This is going to be one of my missions this summer is to try to recon some areas that might get loaded with wind blown snow.
But...still tons of snow certain areas. The drift that's taller than my dog, was literally just shy of waist deep on me (me being 6ft tall). Wasn't too cold either, gauge at Carver's Gap said 20degrees F. Winds were gusting maybe 20-30. Roads weren't bad at all below 5000ft. Snowfall across the area literally fizzled out just minutes (driving wise) away from mountaintops and would be more or less rounding different ridgelines.

BTW, poaching only involves skiing a closed area. Roan Mtn and all of the backcountry everywhere is always open (subject to snow cover) thus cannot be poached. Poaching would be hitting the slopes of Beech/App/Cat/etc. when they are closed to get the freshies.

I doubt there would have been any serious snow cover from this storm on any of the ski trails...I didn't see any on the web cams (although Sugar/App looked like the snow filled in a pretty good bit), but NOTHING like the wind filled areas on Roan Mtn. MAYBE some of the ski area trails would have filled in a bit on the edges of trails, but I think it would have hit or miss. Given more time Tuesday afternoon and a little bit closer proximity, I might have tried to check out Sugar or Beech...maybe Wolf Laurel (a lot of snow fell in that direction).

I wonder if anybody poached any of the ski areas?2 or 3 years ago after an April storm,I hiked up Sugar and saw a few tracks going down sugar slalom and whoopdedoo.Of course whoever made those tracks probably scraped up their skis because there was rocks and grass showing from the tracks.
