Every year I have a trip or two to Las Vegas. Just got back a few days ago so let's share. Outside of the usual expected vegas adventures, I drove out to Red Rocks on my way to the airport. In one word: freaking cold. In fact, 44F and howling wind. Otherwise, red rocks is a nice and sometimes spectacular place with enough miles of trails to keep you busy for several days. Lonely place, also.
First, the view from my room. Guess the hotel ?
... then the drive out of town....
... into the canyon ...
... typical view of the ... red... rocks...
... red rocks ...
... view .... (really really cold at this spot)
... trail ...
... oasis caused by a spring. a few acres of plants and trees before the water seeps back into the porous rock ...
... inside the oasis ...
... could be Appalachia here ....
... back to the desert ...
... and then gone for good.
Sharp-eyed viewers will see a smudge in the first few pictures - cold caused some condensation on the lens that took me a while to notice. Mostly, I was putting the camera away as soon as possible to get my hands out of the wind.
ok now, ready for the real season.
The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard

Nice little TR Pagamony! Red Rock canyon is a real fun place to actually take a drive up to. Just north of the canyon is where Mount Charelston is at, where you can Ski Las Vegas. Now with the hotel, If I remember correctly you were stayin at Caesar's Palace. So, What do I win?:D

for extra credit - which tower ?
LV snow bowl did open for a week earlier in October, but is now closed. Otherwise, I might have been motivated to drive up there, though the wind at 4000' higher would probably have killed the deal. It was nasty.

I would have to say it was The Palace Tower? The winds are usually like that most of the year, especially with a northwest flow. The winds up at LV snow bowl probably were not as bad because they are usually blocked from Mount Charleston peak and the whole range behind snow bowl.

Great pictures -- and a great escape from Las Vampires. It must have been cold -- that wind keeps blowing till it hits moisture and dumps all over Utah I guess

Sorry, no bonus, but you still get the brew. That is Augustus Tower on the south side; overall a fantastic view that way. Doubtful I would get to LV during ski season.

I thought Red Rocks was okay, but if you factor in that you can rent a car and be at Zion in 3 hours it blows it out of the water.
... and bryce and marble and grand (of course) and a host of others, even the small state parks can be incredible. Wife and I made the circuit way back in the pre-kids days, rental car, sleeping bags, and tons of peanut butter and sliced bread. every chance i get I get out there again. i love travelling.
