The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard

The messageboard is now in read-only mode and no new posts or topics can be created. We will leave the messageboard up for historical purposes, but you will not be able to make new posts or comment on existing ones.

We have started a Discord server and hope that you all will join us on there. Technology has changed over the years and maintaining the messageboard has become somewhat of a pain in the butt and Discord offers many features for users, the main one being a very polished mobile app.

We really hope you all will join us on Discord and think you will like the platform. Use the invite link below to join.

In the morning the loading area wasn't bad at all. The way I see it, I snowboarded today. It was a good day.

I do agree that the loading area was just obscene. And it does not surprise me that sugar would do that.

Cataloochee may not have had enough to groom, but they did have enough coverage to never have muddy spots in the lift line. Also, they knew they didn't have enough base at the quad to open it so they chose not to. Good call.

It should not be a race to see who can open the first but who can provide the best quality terrain.

Agreed. Like someone else said, as much as I'm wanting to strap in and carve it up, I'll wait for some quality conditions. Last year we drove up from Atl for opening day and it was a huge disappointment, lessoned learned!

if you liked the mud yesterday, you'll love it today, never got below 40 last night and now it's about 60f up there!if you ski ,wear the cheapest skis you have or better yet, rent them and sign that ins waiver, they might learn a lesson after their equipment is torn up!I still ski Sugar but I usually skip the 1st 2 weekends unless it's been supercold w/lots of snow!At least today,if yer up there you could get a farmers tan!

sugar also opened a run probably 3 or 4 times longer than cat did. I do agree that the muddy spots should have been fixed; I would have been pretty mad using anything other than rock skis. also, it seems like sometimes when runs are not open when the look ok to ride it makes people upset, i know it always bugs me. And if i was at cat and the only reason they didnt open rock island was because they couldnt get snow to stick in the liftline, i would have gladly walked down to load and skied the longer run. sugar offers that, cat doesnt. In the ski report they said the base depth was marginal, so they didnt lie about it either. in the end they charged a few dollars more than cat for a much better run, and the liftline got muddy. im sure people still had fun and didnt mind the skiing too bad. its the first day, it will get better

how pissed would everybody be if neither cat or sugar opened this weekend because of metiocre conditions? If you do not like it do not buy it, but its good to have the option to buy it. I know I would have had fun; I have not skied since the ides of march last year

That picture at the lift, Is that pure mud or is it just muddy slush? I don't see how people don't fall and break their neck unloading there!!! Is there traction?
