Since the hubby and I were the only two without a hangover this morning we left everyone and went to Beech for some fun. New Year and new run open! The mountain was socked in by fog but that didn't keep us from getting on the lift to go ski down Oz. Run looked good, plenty of snow, a few dirt spots but no real ice, blowers still going at the bottom which made that part really nice. New lift comfy with cushions, however spending 20 minutes stuck on it not the best way to start the day! Note to self: Maybe should wait a day when they are opening a lift that was upgraded and didn't run for a season.

Shawnehaw a little icy only went down it once , Robbins good snow however blowers and fog made certain parts of it skiing blind. Southern Star fast and fun, the snow a little bumpy but again no real ice spots that we found.

After a turn at the Beechtree to warm the frozen bottom back up, went back to the top to try Oz again (yes, we're gluttons for punishment) and saw that the lift wasn't moving again so back to Robbins and Southern Star.

All in all, with all the melt yesterday and then freeze of last night, Beech did a good job of getting rid of ice. Blowers were going at the top of White Lightening so keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

For all the road condition threads, back roads now snow covered with a layer of ice, but Beech Mtn Parkway open. Gravels trucks moving through back roads! Crowds back at 2p so called it a day. Happy New Year!

I'll just add today's report here.

Cold and windy! that's the main thing. Lots of powder, ice and frozen hardpack. Sounds contradictory but true. One minute you're in knee deep powder, then skidding, then back in the pow. Couldn't see for anything in the morning due to wind and natural snow. There were some guns on too, but it was mostly windy.

That said, Lower Shawneehaw was pretty sketch but Robbins was great. Oz was closed in the morning but open after lunch. Really good coverage, not much ice, mostly frozen hardpack and powder, even some untracted sides. The wind was enough that often, it seemed untracted each time you came down the run.

Thanks to Ski Patrol for helping with our walking wounded girls. You did a great job.

All pictures by Bultaco today. Not many action shots, to cold and windy. Still a really fun day.

Cold! Wind chill -10

The roads were pretty rough on the way up. To many crazies driving.

The sun finally decided to come out. View from the Oz Bridge.

4x4 was a nessecity for yesterday morning. A few without made it but with real difficullty. The roads coming down were fine last night. They had 4 inches of new snow overnight so that was most of the problem. With the temps as low as they are, there will still be a few slick spots but there will not be any freeze -thaw problems. Just check to see if any new stuff has fallen as they have been getting at least a dusting almost every day. The Alpine webcam or Charlie's Beech cam will be a good indicator of what the roads look like.

Face protectors and googles are a must!!! Handwarmers too. I did not need foot warmers with my boots but everyone else in my party did, especially the boarders. Had on two layers under my pants and three layers under my jacket, plus two lycra hoods under my helmet. The wind still cut through while on the lift. However, I was never really cold.

Couple of times on top, the wind pushed me backwards while getting to the top of the slope. Wind not as bad on the Oz lift so I spent a lot of time there.

Very true words. I worked at the South Pole 2000/2001. -100F wasn't rare. Clothing, headgear, and good gloves make all the difference.

I am wearing the Uggs I pulled out of the skua bin (i.e. free to take) at The Pole almost a decade ago. The bottom has finally worn out. Guess I need to replace my first generation Uggs.

Woke to -4 degrees. Funny when guy at locker room said, "I used to live in Anchorage Alaska and this would be considered a cold day there." Wind was up but not as bad as yesterday, still really blowing at the top!

Oz didn't open until the afternoon, best runs of the morning were Robbins Run to Powder Bowl and Southern Star to Powder Bowl. All the nice fluffy powder was groomed but they were still blowing on Robbins and White Lightening snow was drifting over to star. Covered ice patches nicely and made both runs fast and fun! Didn't use Freestyle as it still had many ice patches, and didn't make it over to Shawnehaw. Oz opened in the afternoon and we were wishing for our ruby shoes as the wind was blowing us back away from the bridge! Oz was nice like yesterday, hard pack at the top, then nice powder at the bottom, nothing like a cushion to make a slow lift tolertable!

Wasn't the fun powder of yesterday but sun and less wind made the day great anyway. Roads: 4 degrees and Beech Mtn pkwy was salted (or whatever they use) kept it clear, back roads still ice covered with fresh snow (not too bad). 4w or all wheel drive otherwise chains a good idea on back roads. Did see several cars waiting for the wrecker (gee all had FLA licenses).

Lots of work on White Lightening, with this FBO cold should be open before Winterfest this weekend. Anyone coming?
