We like Rimfire too! The truck rack clears at 6'-10" & the parking garage is good to 7'-0"
Typically 6 hours for us too from the east side of Raleigh... could probably push 5 hrs with no stops and keeping the hammer down...

^^ I typically take ...I64 to 92 to 39 to Marlington then 219 to 66, but I may give the 92 to Cass a try next time up... there are a few other variations that you can 'search' for...

I took the 66 east to 92 a couple years ago leaving the Summit early on Sat. Not fun in the fog. Very curvy mountain road, although it helped that it's mostly down hill in that direction. Still managed to get home in 6 hours, with just a stop to get gas and food to eat in the car.
If driving in the dark or any sort of non-optimal weather, I would go via Marlington the next time.

FWIW, Google maps doesn't even list that small town as Cass, there's no name actually. That's why I missed it earlier. I see it now though.

Well, you have to get off that plateau one way or another. 66 gets you down faster, 219 is more gradual but then you have the Elk Mountain pass also. Try them all and have fun.
