My dad and i drove up to marion on saturday afternoon. We started seeing ice in the trees before we drove into SC on 85. By the time we got to greenville there was a considerable amount of ice, even some on the interstate and exit ramps/overpasses. Marion had received 7-8 inches of snow. There was a pretty bad sleet/freezing rain crust on top of it that was present throughout all the mtns I would guess.
I ended up skiing some marion bc runs around my aunt's house.
To truly be safe in the backcountry, it is always necessary to dig a pit and analyze the snowpack carefully. What I found was shocking. the storm had created an inverted snowpack with light powdery snow as the base layer and an inch thick layer of ice on the surface. At the time it was safe to ski it as the surface layer helped to keep the base from sliding. I can only imagine what the avvy conditions will be like after the next storm as the new snow will not bond with the current surface layer.
Over the summer I bought some rossi s3's on clearance for a great deal. They are an ideal all mtn ski that can ski any condition well. they are 180 and something like 123-92-117
some runs i made.
nice clear morning
deep snowpack
lone track, not as good as it looks

On our way back down on 221 we pulled onto the parkway which was surprisingly not barricaded in the northerly direction. After about half a mile the road was not plowed.

Great pics. I would love to do some cross country on the parkway it looks so nice. How was the liftline with that nasty crust on top? It looked like there were a bunch of tracks, but it seems like the crust would've made it unbearable.

i didnt ski that lift line. i skied under the green chair and it was tough. I had to pretty much do hop turns or just very gentle turns. The top of sugar slalom next to tom was really nice, it wasnt groomed but it was tracked and there were some nice moguls and crud to ski.
