I ended up working fairly late, and slept in a bit today, my last chance to do so for a while. The plan was to explore some of the backcountry adjacent to the Canyons Resort, specifically off the 9990' lift/peak. A really nice day for touring, perfect weather and bluebird skies. On the hike up, looking over into Dutches Draw, already tracked out:
An E panorama from the summit of 9990', with the Uintas in the far distance:
W view from the top, looking down BCC. Note the LARGE slide on the ridge in center foreground:
Being so close to a lift, there were quite a few tracks around, but most were headed back into the Canyons. Going the other way, into BCC there were fewer. I had planned several potential routes and ended up making a descent into Beartrap Fork:
Looking back at my track, in the center:
Panaroma of Solitude, Brighton, and upper BCC:
After the skinning back up, a view towards DV from the PC Ridgeline:
When hiking is involved, fresh can usually be found:
More low-angle goods:
I love Utah:
So do some other like-minded people:
Wasatch Fitness Club. Luckily the trail was already broken, so I got off easy. I am still waiting on my AT boots, which will weigh considerably less than my alpine boots:
Not blower pow, but still excellent conditions:
Ended up skiing back down McDonald's Draw back into the resort. The Canyons is advertising on their trail map that they are planning on running a lift next year up Iron Mtn, which is the fir-clad peak in the upper right of the pic. Depending on where their boundary will be, this might make TC and PCMR adjacent:
Enjoy!!!

They should link all three of the PC resorts together and with one lift ticket.

I've heard it said that building just three lifts would link ALL of them together, the Park City resorts with all of the Cottonwoods. Proposals have floated around for years to that effect. But you get into working around national forest lands, private lands, robust opposition from local enviromental groups/backcountry folks, and then the biggest hurdle-seven major resorts with seven different owners. However, it is slowly moving that way it seems. Just look at the Alta-Bird pass. That happened not too long ago.
It wouldn't suprise me if TC & PCMR link up, as it would benefit both of them. A mere rope seperates DV & PCMR for probably a mile. But DV jealously protects their brand, and I've heard from senior management that the fear is that hordes of PCMR skiers would descend on DV to eat and crowd out our dining areas. I don't blame them, I'd rather eat at DV too for the money. This seating capacity is where DV comes up with their mythical daily skier limit. It may come about however in the future, if skier visits drop with the poor economy. I could see a DV upgrade or surcharge on a PC triple-super-pass. That would appeal to DV's target market.

Some day I'm going to ski at The Canyons proper. The last (and only) time I skied that area it was Park West. Has it changed any since then?

linking the pc resorts with the cottonwoods would be terrible. It would seriously hurt the wasatch bc. look on tgr at the massive backlash at the proposal of expanding alta and installing a lift up flagstaff for avvy control...

Another lesser known controversy is that Solitude wants to expand up into Silver Fork Canyon as well. Tying the 3 in PC wouldn't impact too much, but yes there would be a bitter struggle to link them all together. Many of the proponents for this are Utah chamber of commerce types who want to knock CO off as #1 in skier visits. If it happened this would be the one place in North America where you would have a European-style ski area. Doubt we'll see any push for the next 20 years or so.
