View from the chair.

ME!

Mrs. Droogie!

With the heavy crud I finally put up the Blend's and busted out the Hellbents. Their girth and rocker was very helpful in making the trees and cut up snow more skiable.

Fun! Oh yeah, I forgot the mention that Lookout straddles both Idaho and Montana.

Heading up the lift from the main lodge. Lots of fun terrain off this lift.

Lookout does have some solid glades.

These trees and everything else skied okay, but had it not rained yesterday it would have been a VERY solid day. The two inches of new snow on top of the ten inches that got rained on did ski pretty well though.

Looking down a chair on the Idaho side.

NOAA says 3-5 inches tonight and 2-4 inches tomorrow at Schweitzer. They say 100% chance of precipitation. It has started raining in town and snowing at the mountain. I'll git some tomorrow!

12.30.11: 5 inches of new snow at Schweitzer!

So snow levels were down to 3600 feet and the very bottom of Schweitzer is 3900. The village is at 4700 feet. Resulting in 5 inches of snow on top of a rain crust. Lots of fun to be had and the best snow was up high. Down low it was REALLY heavy.

Southbowl chutes.

Visibility was a challenge at times. I saw two guys straight-line down the lift line of the Lakeview triple. This was pretty steep crud in low-visibility and probably one of the 5 craziest things I have seen someone do on skis considering the visibility. I spent most of the afternoon skiing most of the lines off the Lakeview triple chair. It serves some of the highest terrain that is pretty steep and a lot of it requires a trip to the base and two chair lifts to get back up. The two chair rides was a deterrent that made the powder stay put all afternoon. Even though it was the high holidays lift lines were not an issue at 0-2 minutes if you were with another person and you got right on the chair if you were a single.

I was definitely hoping for more snow and lower temps. The rain crust was definitely impacting the skiing. Without that stinking crust the skiing would have been phenomenal. The North Idaho Avalanche center had avi risk listed as extreme and a few runs off the top of the Snowghost double were closed for awhile.

12.31.11: No new snow, but still good skiing.

My sister-in-law had to be at work at 7:00 AM. So we got there WAAAY early. Here is a pic of the sunrise:

My knee has been feeling pretty fantastic. Here is one of the few action shots that I have been able to get. I am the lone skier in the picture ripping down a black groomer. If you look at the ridge in the background those are the South Bowl Chutes. I have hit pretty much every logical line that you can see here. I also skied the line that runs from the top to the bottom in the center of the picture and then had to do some bushwhacking to get back to the base. It looks awesome but it is very narrow with lots of saplings leaving only one or two routes that you can go down making it into a luge track. It was terrible to ski and I didn't feel comfortable doing it with my new ACL. I took my time and don't think I would both with it unless there was at least 10 inches of new and my knee was 100%.

Mrs. Droogie hitting one of her first blacks.

Yeah, I'll finish it for you...

There was still good snow to be found of the Snowghost double chair and t-bar.
