Skiing Rules' ongoing TR's and observations from High Boy friends

Today was well, pretty awesome. It snowed about 8 inches overnight, it was enough to soften things up and provide us with a few faceshots, but the hardpack underneath was still felt and some areas turned into moguls again after a few hours of skiing. It did dump all day, and mike and I got true first tracks down stone crusher, or the chute directly lookers right of high boy, whatever its called. Its quite a feeling to be standing atop 900 or 1000' vert of truly untouched powder on a perfect pitched chute. There were a few bumps still visible in the snow from where the moguls didn't quite fill in, but they were more like pillows, so all was well. We lapped the High T a couple ore times including some pretty awesome areas of the eagles nest that i hadn't skied yet, the area was in the rustler four vicinity, which is a pretty burly cliff band through some trees that has a very narrow chute to come through, or you have to huck. The trees around it were great, it was very easy to find untouched snow. The snow was pretty sloughy today since the bed surface the new snow fell on was was pretty old and had experienced a couple freeze thaw cycles, so the bonding wasn't incredible. We caused several long running sloughs, nothing that would bury you or really even take you off your feet, but still easy to get things moving. We were both beeping inbounds, if you have a beacon it just doesnt make sense not to wear it inbounds on storm days. There have been several inbounds avy deaths the last few years and even this year, so its just one more thing that could save your life. I took mike up to the Keyhole for the first time after skiing a lot of tracked snow for the previous couple hours. I think he was skeptical about my stories of deep untracked pow late in the day, but he was a believer after the first turn. The area doesn't get many tracks so there was no textured snow or moguls underneath, just 18" of untracked pow. And by untracked I mean you wouldn't even see another track until the chute through the cliff bands. We were both hollering and laughing the whole way down; its a truly incredible run and face shots were had every turn. I'm still smiling about it. After the keyhole run we got back to the lodge, and jumped in the hottub for a quick hamme before work.



Tonight we go into interlodge at 11pm, the road has been closed since 7:30, and it is nuking up here. Its 10 degrees and pretty windy, the snow is absolutely blower and tomorrow is going to be insane. 3 interlodges in the 3 weeks since I have been here, I love this place.

Ben and his gf are very cool people and Ben is one of the better skiers i've skied with. He used to race NCAA on the dartmouth ski team and he absolutely rips. The snow in the pic is not as good as it looks, it was actually pretty firm crud with a lot of bumps, but that is what makes you a better skier. photo is from two weeks ago.

^nope, that was before the helmet I ordered showed up. I wear a helmet everyday now though, and I have for the last 10 days or so.



SkiAtl- I do still use the spy goggles, but I just noticed today the top mesh above the lens is torn, so snow gets in them. After our first run today down high boy (which was 10" of untracked blower powder with some wind drifts, I suck, I know) and after many face shots I was wondering why there was snow in my goggles. then I realized the mesh was torn.



Today was cold as bawlz. It didn't snow as much as the forecast was predicting, but we still picked up a respectable 10" or so. It was windy so in some areas it was 5" of kinda dense wind scour, other areas like the Ho was waist deep blower, and different parts of the mountain had everything in between, except slush. The high today at Collins top was -4 degrees, with a nice 35mph wind and driving snow, some gusts were higher. Interlodge lifted around 9:20, but the road stayed closed for hours due to an accident at the mouth of the canyon, Country Club pow anyone? The snow was very slow today and all the cat tracks were pretty bad, it was all skating and poling. It's still brutally cold and we might pick another few inches tonight, so tomorrow should be another nice day, albeit cold as heck. no pics today, it was just too dang cold
