SR, glad you got out there for the season. It's one of those things you will never look back on with regret. Cheesey as it sounds there is a lot of truth in those Warren Miller cliches like "No one on their death bed ever thought or said I wish I had spent more time in the office." Good on you for taking the risk and doing it.

Made it back to GA this morning. I wasn't planning on it, but I still ended up putting myself through some pretty long azz days driving. two days from Glenwood springs to ATL. I did however have the best bbq I've ever had in Kansas city yesterday. if you're in the area go to Gaines and Sons BBQ. It's not a dive by any means the food is insane and very reasonably priced and they have pitchers for $6.00. I'm sure there are other awesome bbq joints in KC though
I'll have one more TR to close out the season
on a side note, I drove through some areas of complete devastation from the tornadoes on my way back. st. louis by the airport was in rough shape, but the worst was in Ringgold, GA. It's a moderately sized town right on 75 south of Chattanooga that got hit directly. It looked like a bomb went off, there really wasn't much left. keep them in your thoughts and prayers

ok heres one of the last belated TR's from the last couple days in UT and some Aspen highlands touring.
These are pics from 4/23. Supreme closed about a week before these were taken, so it was nice and powdery since it snowed about 2' on it since the closure. This is the top section right under the chair. here you can see the field goal air through the two trees center left of the pic, and the diving board which is the obvious drop under the chair. everything was smooth and untracked that day so I hit the diving board one last time for the season. Snow was a little damp but resembled powder a lot more than slop. everything was about 12" deep. you can kind of see my tracks and landing spot in the pic
Now I had to decide where to go.

I went with #2 as it's a longer run.
I was pretty smoked at the bottom so I sat on the chair for a few mins to review safety protocol.
I was thinking I was only going to make 1 run, but then I came to and realized I had a couple more days in the west, and it was a pow day this day. Knowing how long and hot the summer is I was forced to ask myself if on some hot as crap day in July I would be glad I skinned up for another lap of sweet april powder, or if I would be glad I skied down and called it quits. Pretty much a no brainer...

I skinned up around the corner of spiney chutes near the rope of Catherine's. It was steep in spots
This is the white squaw area, there are lots of great drops and straightlines on that face. If I can figure out how to draw on the pics like EC does I'll highlight some of the lines.
This rock has all kinds of great names. The tamest of which being 'Elephant's a$$'
Here's a pic of the Supreme bowl area. chock full of awesomeness
So I got up to the top of Catherines area above the top of the chair to find the first bowl covered in 16" of the best unaffected powder I found all day. no wonder there were tracks. Mine are the freshest ones on the left side of the pic. The turns were powder bliss. It's proven; earned pow turns are waay tastier than lift served, and April earned pow turns are pretty much the S%!T.

The next day was high boi 4/24. The morning was fun with clear skies and good snow. I skied grooms and high T most of the day. I met up with some gmd'ers and rallied around in ridiculous outerwear and pounding hammies. Ben showed up around 1pm and didn't bring flair, but he had been paddling in the morning so he grabbed his paddle. Ben's as good at paddling as he is at skiing. He's a very strong skier. Ben ripping highboi in heinous crud/mash taters/crust.
And then highboi. The castle poked out of the clouds and looked pretty beautiful. The fact that I was leaving the next day was hitting home in a pretty serious way and I was totally happy to stand in awe on top of my favorite resort with a bunch of great people at the end of the biggest season anyone could remember. As of 5/22 Alta is at 759".
Here's pretty much what I was seeing due to a number of reasons that shouldn't be discussed here.
This is Alta. The party was pretty crazy. It started getting rowdy towards the end.
After my last run at Alta. I was one of the last people to leave the top. It was a rough ski down. I was happy to make it without falling, thats it.
A pretty wild after party ensued at the pdog bar.
The next day I left. And it was snowing. Little did I know they were the first flakes of a monster 3' dump that would ultimately cause Snowbird to shut down for a day...because of too much snow. During the last week of April.
Eastern UT is beautiful in a different way: The range. looking towards Moab.
Western CO
The next day I cruised around the glenwood spgs area and Roaring Fork Valley. It's God's country.
I found myself in Aspen with my skis and an appetite for virgin pow turns.Aspen is a cool town even if parking is non-existent. Definitely a very different feel than LCC, but I would be pretty ignorant to expect any different. I wasn't sure where to ski but a quick call to Ben revealed that Aspen was closed so I decided to skin up the mtn at Highlands.
the top of the first pitch. there was about 6" of kinda heavy windblown snow, but there was no crust, so it was all smiles and nice easy trail breaking.

The weather was moving in
But there was still great visibility for a few mins. Some cool looking BC back there
Snow? Check. Still deep mid-mtn at the highlands

I skinned to the top of Highlands' highest lift in 2.5 hours. It's 3600' vert. so it was definitely worth the effort. no pics at the top due to bad vis and just not really feeling like pulling out the camera. at the top the snow was about 14" deep and pretty manky, but it was fresh and surfy and pretty great.
A shot of my tracks in some trees mid-mtn. there was a rollover there so it's kind of a shallow angle over the snow. I kicked off a few wet "pushalanches" on the way down, but it was nothing unexpected and very manageable.
Still a ways to go on some mellow groomers and nice snow.
From the bottom. The sun came out again. At the top a patrol told me the mtn was technically closed to uphill traffic due to sleds and cats working at tearing the mtn down for the season, but it wasn't a big deal he was friendly and I wasn't causing any problems. I think they told one of the cat drivers to run over my skinner so other's wouldn't see it and think of going up. That's the only thing I can figure because the cat only went up directly over my skinner then came back down. It was pretty funny. Cat is in the middle of the run where my skinner is
