here are a few mediocre phone pics because I can't find my P&S.

I went up white pine for a while and found good snow for a few turns before I took the trail back to the car. It was a lot of hiking for little decent skiing, but it was perfect getting out and skiing pow for the first real time this year.

took out a good piece of trail before seeing this

skinning up that on sugary snow was tough, but it opened into a great pow field

I skied from the top of it which resulted in the best turns I could have hoped for given shallow coverage and little new snow we've had. It was filled in but not wind textured in any way. I dug a pit at the top and couldn't move anything things seemed pretty stable but very sugary which will cause problems later

[no rocks were contacted in the harvesting of that pow]

Edit: When I got on TGR after this post the last post in the vaunted Ski and Snowboard Forum was by Paj in Wasatch Conditions 11-12!

yesterday I went up pretty high in white Pine to Lake Peak and skied with a buddy from Alodge. skinning on dynafits and bros is great it's actually brotastic. visibility was bad up top partly due to the rain(yes, it was raining at 10,200') but more like drizzle mixed with frozen drizz, graupel, and sleet; a magnificent model of SE winter time slurry. Snow was pretty rotten beneath the thin breakable drizz crust and it really wasn't that bad because the crust didn't behave like thick breakable suncrust. I tagged a few rocks which was expected and didn't do damage to speak of.

I passed some pretty wild avy debris fields up high coming down from the pink pine ridge. It looks like it slid huge 10-12 years ago because of the stubble trees that have filled in since then. the slide ran long and far and slightly up hill on the mtn side opposite the start zone. It looked like tornado damage. here's a pic or two

Yikes man. Rain to 10,200? That blows. Last MLK weekend I was at Snowbird and it poured to the summit and then promptly turned to glacial ice. Hope it turns around for you.

The 4-6" of graup and denser snow has significantly helped things. If you know where to look goods will be had.

Other places not so much

Things started off pretty warm prob around 37 down at the trailhead, but the higher I got the winds picked up and it got pretty cold. for a little while. I went up to twin lakes and headed up toward patsy.

N and NW facing Wolverine cirque in the background

I skied down some exceptionally well spaced firs that had protected the snow and acted as a net for better coverage. the skiing was pretty fantastic and untracked also I didn't hit any rocks to speak of. the turns were good all the way to the first section of the summer road.

I hiked from my car to the top of the pass in 44 minutes; that's more like it.

So far I've skied 15 days, 14 of those day have been hiking. I still don't have a pass anywhere because I'm waiting to see if things don't turn around before 1/31 since pass prices drop $100. The lhasa's and dynafits have been an excellent alternative. I really can't imagine hiking on anything else at this point; lapping areas is so much easier now and since the snowpack is low I usually hike up something then lap the upper section with the most snow. hitting rocks is a way of life out here right now.

12/31- Last turns of 2011 and they were surprisingly good. The day before it snowed a few inches followed by strong wind (gusting to 60 at ALodge). Protected areas holding good turns could be found

end of the line for me

I broke trail and had the privilege of first tracks

I skied from the trees lookers left of the bottom of the chute

ALodge New years's buffet. The Alta Lodge is pretty classy. It's definitely a guests lodge and the food is the best I've ever had or seen anywhere. Employee meals even are pretty stellar

1/2/12 I went up to toledo pass, but got there too late. The slope had gone into the shadows so the skiing was bad. Lots of weird breakable crust so it was hop turns for a good ways.

It was still worth it without a doubt

the next I decided to check out fantasy ridge top of grizz gulch. It's a W aspect so I was thinking the sun would soften things up in the afternoon; not so.

At the trailhead I was skinning up the summer road when I saw a sled towing a toboggan heading my way so I stuck out my thumb. A pretty cute resident picked me up and knocked off 10 minutes of skinning.

Hi Chad, why the long face?

Nothing to see from the way down. Things weren't good.

A few days ago we were forecasted for 1-3", but it snowed 8-11"

I lapped upper cardiff a few times hitting rocks, stumps, etc each run, but there were a number of good turns

The last turns from 2 of 3 laps

Good to see you're making the most of your time out there, SR.... let's hope this pattern changes next week like the forecasters are predicting!
