I'm just going to leave this thread for all Timberline/Canaan/Whitegrass trip reports this season. Anyone can post pics up in here, just try to keep it to the WV resorts and or WV backcountry expeditions.
Timberline today, clearing skies throughout the day but still very, very cold. Probably high of 10-15 degrees with 0ish wind chill. I heard from numerous folks that today was warm compared to the past two days, which have evidently been pretty miserable.
First time on skis this season, tried to get my legs under me on Upper White Lightning:
Word of advice: Don't go to Timberline if you seek high speed lifts. Do go to Timberline if you want fun terrain, good snow, and an old school vibe. Fixed grip triple is all she got:
I think a decent amount of snow has fallen the past couple days, but it was CRAZY windy as well. There was good snow in the trees but any open terrain was pretty scoured. Touring this morning was mostly a wash, but it let me know how windblown all of the meadows are, and that they need sustained cold temps and another couple feet to make it $$. Off The Wall is a double black, which means in Timberline speak that they leave big snow whales on the trail and dont groom. Find EC:
BTW, these last four pics coming from iPhone. Turns out DSLR battery is unhappy at 0 degrees; didn't want to lug that thing around anyway. To get to Off The Wall you get a glimpse of The Salamander. Rec: Don't take the Salamander unless you like pushing and/or skating to get to the bottom. Nice grooming though:
Spent most of the day on Off the Wall. Good snow, fun to bop from whale to whale and see how fast you can get to the bottom:
Thats all for now, perhaps back there this weekend. Should be nice, they were pushing around the snow whales on closed trails today preparing to open a bunch more terrain.
The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard

Just curious how you would rate Timberline/Canaan vs the other resort in the SE?
Sorry for the ignorance but, It looks like there are 2 separate areas just a couple of miles apart? Do you have to buy separate lifties? What is the deal?
I have been to Sugar and Beach as well as SS but I would also love to try some new terrain. Thoughts on the terrain and the overall experience of on these 2 areas please. Thanks for the help

^^^Good memory brookbarrell- I'm not sure if that deal is in effect this year or not.
Timberline has fewer trails than Snowshoe, but better terrain (trees, bumps, ungroomed trails, etc). You'll find yourself running the same 4-5 runs, but I usually find myself doing the same thing at SS as well, so kind of a wash. Haven't skied at Canaan yet, but probably will this year. The ski areas are indeed just a couple miles apart- it's a very short drive between the two.
As always, it depends on what you are looking for- if you are looking for a village atmosphere, SS is better. Old school ski vibe, T-line.

Good deal on that ticket, I like it! No glitz nor glitter at either place. CV is just the state owned version, even more relaxed, depends more on natural snow, no slopeside lodging, strange day lodge arrangement. Both have three chairlifts and claim 37 trails. Some people like the slopes at tline, some like them at CV. It's good to have them both nearby, and with the ticket, no reason not to try both on a weekend. If the snow is good, I'd rate them as my top two favorites in the SE.
