wow! Do they do a pretty good job of keeping the road up to the ski area clear?
I do not have a 4 wheel drive but I made it through some pretty bad stuff up to SS last year driving up from the inn every day. I am thinking even with snow I-40 should be kept in good shape which gets me 99% of the way there.

Don't bet on that. The TN side of 40 is usually in pretty good shape, but the NC side is not as well maintained during snow events. I have driven it on solid pack several times this year.
The road up to Cat is maintained by the ski area and they do a very good job of keeping it clear, but sometimes they still have to limit it to 4wd or chains. They sometimes run a shuttle from the Ghost Town parking lot if the road is too bad for 2wd vehicles.

But you can get stuck in the parking lot at the lodge even with 4wd and need 8 guys Kuching and sitting in the bed of the 4wd truck to get it rolling.....!
guess I better pick up some chains. Sure hope I don't drive all the way there only not to be allowed to drive the last couple miles up
I will be sure to check weather before I leave. Probably going to leave Wednesday afternoon try to get there before it gets dark and spend the night then hit the MTN early Thursday morning.
Is the NC DOT website pretty accurate and up to date? I will be sure to check it before I head out. If all things are equal road condition wise, Is Wolf any easier to get to if coming from middle TN?

I don't know about the DOT websites. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting up to Cat. Usually they only have to restrict traffic up the mountain during the storm. Once it stops snowing, they're good at clearing the road.
