After an epic pow and breakthrough day for some clients at DV on 2/25, my guests wanted to continue the fun and try a different resort. With both Cottonwood Canyons closed and Skiing Rulz locked down on interlodge, I suggested Powder Mountain. The instructor side of me was also considering the astonishing amount of lower-angle powder shots and gentle tree runs, as this couple is gaining confidence off piste (I have skied with their two daughters for three years now, but not with them.)

The weather forecast was for continued snow showers throught the day, but as we neared Snowbasin, the skies cleared, and we were on tap for a blue-bird day. Typical run for us, Ellen and Gene ready to go:

Headed out to Cobabe Canyon:

Gene gets his Utah fix:

Ellen finds her comfort zone:

They were up for a lap on the Lightning Ridge Cat:

On the way down:

While it stopped snowing in the Ogden area mountains, back in the Central Wasatch it continued to snow. Gene and Ellen were able to modify their travel plans to squeeze in one more pow day at DV. Meanwhile, I had a day off, the first after 10 straight work days. When conditions are good, you suck it up and go skiing. A couple of friends from work wanted to go to Pow-Mow and invited me along. Avy conditions were still pretty risky, and I just wanted a day of resort pow skiing. One of our group had never been, so we did a big overview tour. All of us had work commitments in the PM, so we were planning on knocking out early. I had one goal in mind for the day, and that was to hike James Peak, something I'd never been able to do:

On the way up (none of my companions wanted to hike, so I went solo):

Looking out towards the terrain I planned on skiing:

SW view from the summit, Snowbasin is located in the center mountain range:

N view, with heli from Diamond Peaks coming up to drop off guests for another lap:

I traversed out to this point, looking back at James Peak:

Kept pushing out to ski some untracked lines, and explore the ridgeline area. A couple of boarders had been on the cat with me had come out to the same area and we teamed up since we were pretty remote from the rest of the resort. This is what I was looking for:

My signature for that moment in time:

My new buddies, one from Charlotte! Above the top rider is a turn where I ended up touching off a small wind-slab. Nothing quite like that to keep you in the moment:

Pow Mows ski school director had given me some great beta about this area a few years ago and I put it to good use, kept harvesting shots like this:

This ended up being my run of the season so far. I've had some good ones, notably the suck-fest EC and I endured a few weeks ago on a very challenging objective. But the blue skies, fresh snow, and new vistas have made this one my personal favorite, so far! As the season seems to wind down back home, your reporters out here and visitors alike will keep delivering the stoke. Enjoy!

Thats a hell of a high quality trip report. Good story line, good pics, good ending, and somewhere I hope to visit one day.

Looks like powmow stays relatively untracked for a few days, and I like the gnarly lift shot. I didn't see any surface lifts at DV :-)

Thanks.

Don't think I could have skipped that little drop!

What was the guy's name from Charlotte? One of my friends from Charlotte who lives out there is hounding all the time...

We skied Snowbasin Wednesday - Friday last week, wish I had taken a day to Powder! No Complaints on Snowbasin, especially John Paul Quad Terrain!
