On the backside of Beech Mtn. a few minutes outside of Banner Elk there's a river called the Elk. It starts with Elk River Falls, the 55 ft waterfall in Elk Park TN and ends at Twisted Falls. After a 15 minute hike down 800 vertical ft. to the river you arrive at Twisted Falls. The river twists 90 degrees here several times with three waterfalls, the biggest being 45 ft. Its clean and can be run in a kayak or headfirst....I chose headfirst. This is an amazing place a few people get to see. Enjoy!

Beautiful place! How deep is the water at the bottom?

this place looks pretty awesome, definitely going to check it out.

edit: read some pretty gnarly stories online, can you weigh in on the sketchiness factor will? anything we should avoid doing when we go? head first over the falls looks insane!

I wouldn't go down without having someone who's been before.....I definitely wouldn't have gone headfirst without having seen someone do it first.....you know the old saying, "if your friend jumps off a cliff are you going to also"....the answer is yes if he's alive at the bottom. After hiking up to these spots it's actually easier just to jump down rather than hiking back down. This is mother natures water park and she did a damn good job with it.

The water is deep enough so no worries there. The hike up to the other sections/waterfalls is pretty dangerous and difficult (very steep with ropes). A fall or injury here would not be good. Evac would be difficult and would take a while. Other than that, pic a hot day mid July and prepare yourself for an amazing experience that is if you're young enough or just think you are like me. They recently added a parking lot at the trail head so this is a pretty common place for people to visit. Trout fishing is incredible down there as well. Just remember, wet rocks are slippery and hard so don't fall.
