How many people voluntarily drive away from snow for a ski trip? There is me and 8 other people this weekend.

It's been a warm and snow-less January in the valley. Looks oddly brown and very disconcerting.

Saturday:

We were hoping for one day of XC, but Whitegrass has no snow, so it was a nice warm hike to the knob. Also Blackwater falls where trails are closed due to Sandy damage, so we hiked around the signs (sorry). Canaan's snow looks questionable and shiny. but the parking lot was completely full, because... Timberline lifts not running, electrical problems, sort of a playground on the snow at the base and lots of people want refunds. Restarted for empty night skiing.

Sunday:

Tline delivered. Arrived at 8:30, got first row rock star parking, lines not too bad, snow very good on dew drop and pretty good on lightning. Wind not a real problem and bonus - snowmakers turned off. Sirianis pizza and back for more first row rock star parking and night skiing, brews in the pub for the first half, go Ravens. Super rental from Mountaintop. Once again, T-line does not ski like anything south of it, including that place in Pocahontas county.

Monday:

Flurries started as we left, of course....

Overall:

Still a great weekend. Thanks valley!

Did you know that it is customary to include photographs in these entries?

Wow, it sounds a bit brutal -- I noticed that Canaan was listing 1/3 open, I always think of them as the bellweather/ canary

When Chip@ WG, a very happy guy, reports this it's alarming -- SNOWFARM: in tattered white/brown patches , SURFACE: hard as a hammer head.

Sorry about the timing -- care to go to Beech this weekend? I hope to go with some very fine friends and neighbors Fri. or Sun., we have discussed it for two years.

Beautiful pictures -- it is an area you can never go wrong in -- just make do, right?

Now the last picture I know is the fireplace at Canaan, so I get double Waldo points for that.

Thanks for the pictures. March 7? maybe. I am going to try and Make the SS/SkiSE summit this year.

First the view:

After you off load and start down you see the Gravity triple which serves some nice looking runs, they were blowing hard but it still wasn't open (should have poached it)

the sign says "frostbite warning cover bare skin" although it wasn't quite that bad

I took these in 2007 -- as amazing as anyplace I have been since
