I'll let the pictures do the talking... my wife and I were in Kauai for nine days, spending most of our time on the North Shore. If anyone wants recommendations or advice on where to go/stay/things to do, I'm happy to help. East Coaster was also there the week before me, so you've got a couple good sources of information.

The color of the water in the lighthouse shot is ridiculous, seems unreal.
What's the hiking like to the highspots is really overgrown or rocky scramble?

D- the hiking was really, really steep and really, really slick. It rains in the mountains on Kauai ALL the time, so the mud is pretty slick and the trails are steep. That being said, they're also very well-built and taken care of- not really overgrown at all. This picture should give you an idea of some of the stuff we hiked- my wife is literally 20-30 feet above me in this shot:
