no pics yet. just imagine the usual shots with lots of white.

We drove up to Tline on Saturday. Clear and cold, but the cabin was fabulous. Left over 5" on the ground. Sunday morning - it's snowing! Another 5" (my estimate) fell. Timberline was great, half open, good snow, not crowded. The drop was super fun with big luscious mounds in a skiers playground. The wall was a *****, sharp, steep, icy boogers, no fun at all. The lower elevation (flatter, wind-sheltered) trees and officially closed slopes were carved up quickly.

Overnight, the high winds set in. Monday at Whitegrass, good enough snow on the trails but blowing off quickly on the open flats. Did half the three mile trail and I'm not good enough on XC to do more. Saw a few telemarkers, but the kudos go to the guys on the XC gear that really good, they shame the rest of us.

Monday afternoon got a quickie at Canaan Valley State Park. Not much open and wind scoured and rough. No lift lines at all, pleasant crowd, and cheap tickets. You have to love this place anyway.

Tuesday morning, the blizzard sets in. Pack up and drive out to the north to the new highway. Miss the exit. Drive 2 extra hours in white knuckle whiteout conditions, up and down a 10% grade. Snow continued all the way down to Yanceyville, but almost none in Durham.

Good times !

CV just posted on FB they received a foot of snow today and they are going from 20 trails open to 32 tomorrow! If I was not already spending a small fortune going out west in two weeks I would be headed up there now. I sure hope somebody is hitting this tomorrow and taking pictures! You got to love the CV/TL

Pagamony, if a picture is worth a thousand words, in this case your words were worth a lot of pictures ( and I hate TR's w/out pics)

So you had a touring set up at Whitegrass?, more details please, the XC folks are crazy good.

---- I am really and really looking at this weekend but I do not think I will go. The WG site links to Dave's snowfall and it is a very good impartial archive. Everytime I've been able to get off the beaten track Dave has shown a depth of at least 15 inches; it seems a good barometer for trees but I bet all the runs are going to be amazing -- and night skiing at 10 below always moderates the crowds --

we just rented XC gear. as the morning progressed and I became more unsteady, i did want for more width and more stable gear. they also now rent some burly telemark rigs. however, i sort of want to learn to make do with the really light weight stuff and there was not enough snow cover to ski much in the woods or even the main slope anyway. but mr. davidski, there probably is enough snow now.....

I'm going up Friday night. Forecast calls for snow the rest of the week, so there should still be some good photo opportunities over the weekend.

It was killing me to watch the heavy snow on webcam all day yesterday knowing I couldn't make it up there today.

So does that mean my upcoming Utah TR is not the most anticipated one of the year for you after all? :D

That's crazy there is not more people there on MLK with the conditions they have!

TL/CV is the bomb. I can't believe more people don't hit them up. I would rather go there than anywhere in the SE even thought its double the time to get there vs NC from Nashville. Next year I am aiming for the trifecta of CV/TL and WIsp in one week long trip.
