After visiting Chamonix in January, 2012, I had the opportunity to meet a friend of mine from Sweden in Zermatt for a week last year. He is an intermediate skier, so I spent most of the trip on piste, occasionally getting to step into the sidecountry. I flew into Milan, took a 4 hour bus ride to Tasch, Switzerland, and then a short 20 minute train ride from Tasch to Zermatt. I stayed at the very nice, small Hotel Astoria that just happened to be right beside one of the best bars in town, Papperla Pub. It was nice not needing to stumble very far back to my room. Sorry for the very belated nature of this TR.

Below, in the far distance, is the border into the Cervinia, Italy ski area. Nice skiing and excellent food.

Great TR and beautiful photos! I have been to Zermatt in the summer, and would love to go back to ski.

killer -- i take it you were not of-piste alone as that does look killer

great stuff, I want to get there

-- bytheway what were you skiing on, did you get stuff there or bring it, and what was that off piste run like, smooth or crusty? and what was over that edge?

So beautiful! I'm thinking of going to Switzerland next year. Based in your 2012 TR I was thinking about Verbier (plus it's included on the Epic pass). If you had to chose between Verbier and Zermatt which would you chose?

I always rent when I travel so that I can get the best skis for the conditions at that time. There is a wide variety of places to rent from in Zermatt and the prices are comparable to US prices. The snow was very smooth off piste on the day that photo was taken. Over the edge was some small cliff bands.

That is a difficult question. I was only able to ski Verbier for a day, while I skied Zermatt for a week. Both are incredible and you can't go wrong with the terrain in either place, but I think I enjoyed Zermatt a little more because of the town.
