I finally got a chance to check out Timberline this weekend. Every other time I've been to the Canaan Valley, I've gone to CVR.
I was really impressed with Timberline honestly. The lifts are pretty slow, but considering there are no lines, I still got far more ski time in than I would if I had gone to Snowshoe on a weekend.
Many of the more difficult runs were not open, but I thoroughly enjoyed the blues and it was nice to have a run as long as Salamander to casually cruise down when I was looking to maximize my time between lift rides. I enjoyed the diversity of the runs. At CV, many of the runs feel almost identical, so this was a nice change. The tree skiing was also very good.
I don't really have a ton of photos, but here are a few shots from the mountain.
Unfortunately, on Friday night, what was supposed to be 4-8" of new snow instead was about 1 inch of rain, so conditions the second day were not that good. They weren't terrible at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day, it was mostly ice on several of the runs. My friend wiped out near the bottom of Lower Almost Heaven and we're fairly certain he tore, or at least partially tore, some ligaments (although still waiting to hear back about that).
I'm sure most people here have been to Timberline at some point, but if you haven't, I highly recommend you check it out. I plan to go back later this year if I can time a trip with a snow storm so that conditions are great and the whole mountain is open.

Timberline - 1/23-1/25
Thanks for the TR. Looks like the valley is going to get bombed in the next day or two. I am about ready to pull the trigger on a trip their myself for next week. Its been a few years since I have been to TL/CV, so any recommendations for places to eat? The only place I remember that was really good was Hellbenders in Davis.

For me it's at least a 7 hour drive, but I usually find an excuse to make it up there once or even twice a year, usually in Feb or March! It's a great skiers mountain!
Its about 9 hours for me. Most people probably think I am crazy when the NC resorts are so much closer to me here in Nashville, but i actually enjoy the drive/alone time in the car, not to mention the lack of crowds in the valley.

If you're there on a Friday night, TipTop in Thomas has a great hamburger. All natural, local organic beef. Unfortunately, they only sell them on Friday nights. The rest of the week they're just a coffee shop/bakery. When you go into the place, you immediately notice that it is not a place that fits in with West Virginia.
For breakfast, I really like Amelia's at the Windwood Fly-In resort. Their dinner is nothing remarkable though.
Honestly, Canaan Valley Resort/Hotel is probably the best food in the area.
I thought the food at Timberline's lodge was adequate. It wasn't anything special, but it wasn't bad. MUCH better than the food at the lodge at CVR.
Like you guys, I too have a long ride up to the Canaan Valley. It's about 7 hours for me (I live in Charlotte). Despite the long ride, it is worth it IMO. The lack of lines really makes the Canaan Valley my top choice for skiing.

You know it just dawned on me I will be arriving right before the Super Bowl. Would CVR be a good place to watch? I have not been to the the resort since they built the new lodging complex (and thank God they did). I am assuming they have a decent bar area at the hotel with TV's?
