So I had to fly up to Hartford for work on Super Bowl sunday. All kinds of winter storm warnings in effect. The snow starting falling around 11pm Sunday and weather people were calling for 18 inches over the course of Monday.

Here's the lot from my hotel Sunday evening.

and here's what I woke up to.

Easily a 8 to 12 inches of snow and still falling.

I'm here to help train some new hires, and since half of their flights got cancelled and the roads were in bad shape, we cancelled class. It was at this moment I decided I'm taking my Mazda 3 rental car and finding a hill. I set route for Mohawk Mountain. Google decided I should take all highway there. I didn't bother to disagree. About halfway here I realized Mazda traction control doesn't allow the car to drive uphill on a snow covered road. This was becoming a real issue as I literally came to a stop in the middle of the road twice. I opened my map, and thankfully a TGR member suggested Sundown as it is closer to Hartford. I was unintentionally 5 mins from Sundown when I decided I was going there instead.

Nothing to the place really.

The snow was abundant and it didn't stop coming down all day. Refills galore. I had a blast. They had a run called Satans stairway that was really bumped up. Mogul size rivaled most steep Colorado trails, but previous icy conditions lurked on the downhill side of every mogul. I cruised around the hill. There wasn't much to it. But it beat the hell out of training new hires!

I didn't stop much for pics, but here's a few:

And here's a raw, rather boring, clip I threw a song on top of. This top to bottom.

Nicely done! Looks like a North Carolina-type area.

nice.

I was just in Seymour CT for work and heard great things about Sundown from locals. I had Mohawk on my radar but based on your experience and local advice I will plan on going to Sundown. Also want to hit Stratton and maybe Killington.

Be back in a couple weeks.

So you had an unexpected free day on a business trip? Was it just luck that you "accidently" had packed and all your ski wear, equipment, and the GoPro, and taken it to the airport??? Boy are you a lucky guy ;)

Of course....I'm just messing with you. It actually makes me feel better about myself because I do the same thing all the time when I'm traveling on "business" and near any ski areas. Any time I go anywhere north or west in the winter, I scope out all the nearby hills/resorts out and pack my gear, just in case I'm lucky enough to break away for a few hours. My co-workers think I'm nuts because I always want to travel north or west in the winter while they are all wanting to go south. Like your experience, I have had some of my greatest pow experiences just by luck of being in the right place at the right time when a storm has hit and having my work plans delayed or cancelled. I also love using the "I'm flying out to SLC a day earlier than my meetings to avoid jet-lag" excuse. Done a lot of skiing on the 1-2 days before or even after a business trip.

Haha. busted. I definitely skipped out of "working from the hotel" Monday. But I brought my gear because I actually planned to go up to Killington Saturday and Gore Sunday. Basically tacked 2 days onto the back end of my "business" trip. Gotta do what you gotta do to ski!
