This season I was finally able to really get into something I've wanted to do for several years.
What better way to work on the transitions to hike /ride mode and figure out a skinning technique than right ought the front door during the extended snowy period that kept snow on the ground here for 2 weeks .
Elevation 5 ft above sea level.
Front yard snowstake has filled in time to hit the land fill.
Heading out
Too foggy on the approach so I was able to grab a pic of the skin track on the way out .Had to park 1/2 mile away to get to the hill and skin in .Felt like a giraffe in hike mode taking huge strides and covering lots of ground with every step. SO much easier than booting .
Tool set . 159 landlord split, voile light rail + black diamond compactors.
Walked right up in hike mode not even needing the heel risers . After setting a skin track just booted back up for about 5 quick hot laps .
Great to get the transitions and stride figured out before heading out to Canaan( which was going off for the last 2 weeks of feb + early march )
Spruce tree tubes on the way up.
Foot of fresh on top of a solid 2 ft base . Froth level was high.
Off to see the wizard.
2 planker
Befriending the nords.
Tracked out here is crossing another track . So just move over 20 ft and drop in .
What EC said a few years ago is so spot on. Best ski area in WV is WHitegrass. Was able to get 4 memorable days splitboarding here mostly bluesky cold pow days .

So true about tracks at WG... and another dump at the dumpbrookbarrel wrote:

... I have yet to see a split board at Whitegrass, high time ... Did Chip see you because he would have been all over that. Sorry I missed you all season, but if there's a end of the season storm ...
Ok NOW! In the meantime there has been one relentless promoter of WG on here... just sayin'brookbarrel wrote:

But yeah it was this post in 2010 from Eastcoaster that opened my eyes to something better then groomers..' long strange trip since then
EastCoaster wrote: No pics from today- I was trying to get a few quick laps in. I parked at Whitegrass and skinned up Roundtop, then over to Baldy. Two laps down Baldy and into the meadows below, where there were some really great turns to be had- a little steeper than the terrain yesterday. To finish it off, I took the main run back to the Whitegrass "lodge".
Here are my routes from the past two days. Blue is yesterday, from Canaan, dark is up, light is down. Once I got to the top I did 3 laps down-up, then a final lap top to bottom, back to the parking lot. Today is in red, light up/dark down. Up Roundtop, over to Baldy, 2 laps down Baldy and into the meadows, then back to the top of Roundtop and down:
Needless to say, I'll be back. Granted, there isn't very much steep terrain, but right now the snow is epic if you are willing to work for it. There is a great vibe from all the XC and tele guys there- though I did get a lot of suggestions to free my heel. BEWARE THE HIPPIES!!

David I never saw him at all this winter when I was there but met him back in the fall and went on a mtn. bike ride /history lesson with him and he welcomed me back to ride the split there. http://brooksadventures-brookman.blogsp ... -west.html
This season some of the steeper N facing glades at WG were much more manicured and open than when I went there 2 years ago .Just focused on mostly riding those areas and hiking back up after that .DId take a couple laps all the way down to the bottom at the end of the day . What tripped me out even more was when I went to Snowshoe a couple Sundays ago and the entire parking lot was full and I went over to that area in the trees that you and I filmed a run on a few years ago and it was completely untouched and still had real good wintery snow in the shaded steep section (that was sluffing in our video ) . Everyone over there was skiing the sunny burnt out trees runs just slightly off the main run back to the lift and not out deeper where it was holding.
