Had my skis ruined last March by delta. bad on me, Didn't even look, noticed the damage on my
first day on snow this year.

Just a PSA for anyone traveling with boards and I assume, skis. I have a solid, padded travel bag for my boards. I pack them carefully and even place some bubble wrap on the tips. I travelled for years with surfboards and think I know how to pack them as carefully as possible.

I flew Delta home from Denver this past Monday. I had waxed my boards prior to leaving and left the wax on them (to scrape and buff when I got home). When I landed, I unzipped and glanced in and everything was there. I didn't see any reason to inspect closer.

Tonight I was scraping one and noticed a savage ding to the edge and core. Went and grabbed my powder board and its worse. I won't ride the pow board again. Its junk to the core and not repairable. It would appear the bag was dropped hard on its side against a cart or hard edge of something.

Called Delta, I have some status with them and never had an issue like this before. I was told to submit a claim, but should have had an agent inspect the damage prior to leaving. I submitted a claim and am being told initially they do not cover damage to "oversized luggage" or sporting goods. Im pushing on no prior claims and some long time status to see if that helps, but it looks like I'm F'd on replacement or reimbursement. BTW, both boards are new this season.

So, the PSA is DO NOT LEAVE the airport until you inspect your gear.......My bad.... ugh...

Just read this. Last year I used pipe insulation around the entire perimeter of the board. Then taped the piping to the board. After reading this, I believe I will add another layer or look into other options for adding more padding to my bag and securing the boards for my trip to Utah in a couple weeks. Thanks for the heads up.

Sweet trip, btw. Went to Colorado last year around MLK week. Avoided Breck till after MLK monday.. paid off. Hardly any crowds. Feel in love with Abasin, Keystone and Breck. Where did the Keystone tours take you? We did the 1 way cat ride for 5 or 10 bucks to the back bowl, once. Snow was a bit wind swept. Nothing great but new terrain was nice.

The Key Kat takes you out on to Erickson bowl, Bergman Bowl and Independence Bowl. Some excellent tree runs and a lot of open bowl, above tree line stuff. Almost all over 40 degree pitch riding. If you can catch on a fluffy day, its insane. Ive done also on days when it was a little hashy and it wasn't as much fun.

I don't like crowds and resort riding as much as I used to, so to me, $275 for a full day of cat riding with great lunch was well worth it.

My buddy lives up Boreas pass in Breck so we were able to spend a bit of time behind his house hiding from the crowds up on Mt. Baldy skinning and hiking as well. Great stuff. I did ride MLK morning for a few hours and when the lift lines got stupid, we went back up Baldy for some touring.

BTW, great idea on the pipe insulation. Ill consider that next month when I go back.

Sounds like you planned that well. I am starting to get into back country now myself. It was a strange day, as a snowboarder, when I bought poles. (primarily for hiking) Looking into split boards for the future and possibly renting a beacon and some snow shoes to get out in Utah a little bit with my buddies that will be skinning. I know I will be slower than them but loving the idea of getting off the resort.
