2010-2011 Ski WV Reports
doood, did you change from green jacket to blue? some good pics. you talked me into one trip, enough already. Sunday driving to shoe - traditional pre-xmas multifamily trip. Many libations. VRBO, Liftopia, good trail count, it won't suck.

Timberline has fewer trails than Snowshoe, but better terrain (trees, bumps, ungroomed trails, etc). You'll find yourself running the same 4-5 runs, but I usually find myself doing the same thing at SS as well, so kind of a wash. Haven't skied at Canaan yet, but probably will this year. The ski areas are indeed just a couple miles apart- it's a very short drive between the two.
As always, it depends on what you are looking for- if you are looking for a village atmosphere, SS is better. Old school ski vibe, T-line.
The Village is nice and all at SS but its more about the terrain for me. This and SS are about the same distance for me and at first glance it look a little cheaper too. Between the 2 resorts it seems that there would be almost as much terrain as at the shoe. Do Timberline one day, and Canaan the next! Sounds like a good idea. Heck you don't even have to change Hotels.

Timberline, Dec 18 2010:
Snowed a little bit more between Wednesday and Saturday than I had expected. This, combined with a few laps with a local who A. Rips. I mean really Rips. B. Has grown up skiing T-line, so showed me some tree runs that I would not have necessarily gotten into on my own.
Base area (Lodge has lots of character):
SALAMANDER. Some of the tree runs dump you on here by necessity:
The groomers stayed pretty nice all day:
Pretty frozen up top:
This should give you a nice idea of the snow in the woods. Good coverage in sheltered spots on the right aspects, but still need to watch out for graboids. Managed to snag a tip and lose a ski once, hit a hidden rock that sent me for a tumble another, but otherwise some really nice turns in the woods:
Mmmmmmmmm trees were niiiiize:
So was this:
Lap after lap of chalky snow all morning, getting thick/crusty by the afternoon. Was great skiing for the first 3-4 hours though:
Not bad for WV...

I grew up skiing SS, Canaan and Timberline. Both canaan and timberline are desolate mid week except for the holiday weeks. You'll have the whole place to yourself and its usually a blast. Good cheap lodging options midweek as well, depending on what you are looking for. Can get a big house for cheap if you have a larger group, or if you wanna keep it simple the canaan state park lodge is a good bet and usually has good midweek deals. Many small bed and breakfast options and basic hotels also available in the towns of Davis and Thomas, both about 10 minutes from the mountain, and some cool restaurants and local microbrews available there. If you ever do go up on the weekends, purple fiddle in thomas for live music is a must do. Good food as well
