I can't think of anything that I can compare it to directly. It may be comparable to sections of Beech Mtn Parkway or the road up to Hawksnest...though I have not been to either of these in awhile...It's certainly as steep or steeper.
It has loosened up a lot today. It would probably be passable with 4wd...though I would still want chains for going down.
On Monday and Tuesday it was frozen solid. See my first post...cause I have driven in some pretty significant conditions. This hill (and I'm sure there are others that are like it) is crazy. The only maintenance it gets is one gentleman that lives at the top year round...I've seen him with a half empty 50lb bag of salt once. My brother and I have been taking the shovels to it in a couple of sections, in hopes of being able to leave the chains off...there's a couple sections that if you lost it, the consequences would be bad.

No, just a cabin that we were staying in. My family rented it for the week.

I really wish city and public works crews would leave roads unplowed if they realize they arent going to get some pavement showing again or have a reasonable chance of melting the remnants of the mess off.
I am very confident that your 4runner would have been fine if you werent running on a solid sheet of ice coated in wet slushy slick snow. While i was living in seattle, wa we got lots of very similar snow and I have the same style 4runner you have. It would go anywhere just liike normal until they scraped the road down to an skating rink type surface. Then issues arose with steep hills

Well...this hill is certainly unmaintained. Unfortunately, what had happened was the fresh snow got driven on to the point that the entire road was packed down and refroze. We got there on Monday 12/27/2010. There were probably a lot of folks that had been staying in cabins for Christmas and had driven out before we came in. No plow or salt truck touched this road.
