The End of an Era...We are Shutting Down the Messageboard

yea EC's TR might crash the server with all the sick shots he has taken. Sooo much pow while he was here. We did a quick bc mission up grizzly gulch this morning before he had to leave. We got to the top and nuclear winter set in; we were pretty much in a blizzard, but the snow was quite enjoyable as we entered the whiteroom every turn. For late March, the last week and today especially has been cold (highs in the mid 20's, lows in the low teens) and extremely wintery. The sun never came out much, it did make a few brief appearances which were welcome, but I really can't remember a time when we could pick any aspect we wanted to ski and get deep pow and faceshots- South facing included.... for days on end.

Basically what skiing_rules said. We wouldn't have touched it if we thought there was significant danger- avy report was moderate, needing to watch out for wind slabs. Some other folks were skiing that aspect and we knew that it would sluff- we did get about 3-4 inches of light sluff to break free, but it was manageable. The snow stability out here (at least in the cottonwoods) is pretty remarkable.

yea good stability is what you get for not skiing in colorado, or anywhere else other than LCC for that matter

I wouldn't tout the stability out there too much... did you hear about the avy south of SLC (and south of Provo)? Adam Barker's brother-in-law was killed last week when a cornice broke and crushed/buried him. There was a huge crew out there with him, I'm assuming they were all out there for a shoot. If you look on the Utah Avalanche site, it has more details- really sad.

I just saw that report. It sounds like everyone in the group was very experienced. LCC does have a relatively stable snowpack compared to many other mtn ranges; not that we have false confidence in the snowpack.

I probably should have specified LCC/BCC. It's interesting to see how much the avy reports for the northern and southern UT mountains vary from that of the canyons- things are much, much more touchy in those areas. Many times you will have green/yellow conditions in the canyons and orange elsewhere.
Tough break (no pun intended) for that crew- very sad, particularly since they were so experienced and really did things by the numbers (except the guy who stood on the cornice that fell). Just goes to show that anybody can get bitten, and prudence is best. Skiing_rules and I actually backed off some more-fun looking stuff yesterday because we knew it was loaded and skied mellow trees instead.

Don't you think it's about time for Utah/LCC to stop hogging the snow. I mean it's April for crying out loud, do y'all really think it's gonna be ok with every body else to just keep getting pounded?? But really I hope April's record breaking so I can come out the first week in March to some sweet spring corn!
