If it's purely skiing you're after, then I agree... UT it is- IF you can stay up canyon and not have to worry about road closures and all that other crap that comes along with heavy snowfall. However, if it's overall quality of living, then it's tough to beat the Denver area with everything else offered.
Hell, you can't go wrong with either of them, really.
SR, are you going to be out there next winter too, or is it a one-season deal?

I'll be here next winter--probably GMD or Alta Lodge. I agree that CO is a cooler state overall. I would rather live there full time than UT. At this point I'm just after the skiing. BCC doesn't close very often.

So Walker, should I head out May 7-14? Right now it looks like a yes, LCC's got a huge base and cool temperatures in the 7 day forecast. I'm guessing I'm correct in saying you'll already be headed back home? Either way I'd sure like to get my fix in one last time and I think it'd be a sweet road trip (albeit really sad on the way back when I hit the south and the temperature's pushing 90+). Is it worth it?

^ this. I would opt for abasin and loveland. There is a big base but the skiing isn't that great here right now. its been hovering around 35 degrees day and night with overcast. Once the sun comes out the snow will go quick. by going to CO you'll save $, spend less time driving, have more options for skiing, and enjoy a cooler vibe. LCC is emptying out QUICK there won't be many emps to hang with just mormons coming from the valley. with that said you'll have fun regardless of what you decide. I would go to CO though. just my 0.02
btw-- I found the Alta environmental center. it's in the Albion day lodge.
And no, I will not be in UT during those times. I'm heading out the 25th or 26th, just long enough to see the high boi bash.
32 weeks Until it starts all over again!

No crowds, 40 degrees and sunny, and a 100-inch base. Tough to beat.

First off, I have no dislike for Colorado; as a matter of fact I love it, I just find LCC to be a little more fun. After thinking about what you guys said that does sound like a good plan though. My only question is, is there any lift served that late out there. I don't have an AT setup right now so that's mainly what had me thinkin snowbird (the late closing date of lifts/tram).
Secondly I'm really ****ing up the ending to an epic TR. Awesome stuff SR, I can't wait to move out there (west) starting Fall 2012...(seems like a million years from now)
(EDIT: Saw A-basin usually doesn't close until June)

hopefully I'll post a few more pics. DEFINITELY expect pics from the highboi party. Supreme closed last weekend so that part of the mtn is essentially skier compacted backcountry, and its all smooth untracked settled pow right now. I think I'm going to check it out today.
An update from yesterday. It had been warm and wet snow/rainy for the last few days up here with wildcat not even spinning for a couple days for some unknown reason. Then thursday night after an insane wind/thunderstorm up here a cold front puched through leaving about 6" of perfect fluff on top of the smooth graupel/wet snow surface. And there was hardly anyone here. I lapped wildcat with about 6 other people for a couple hours before heading elsewhere. I even threw a 3 off steep roller that I skied away from cleanly, which was kind of surprising. Everything was perfect and fast, I've never skied a kitty lap as fast as yesterday. Then I headed to collins and hit west russ/jitterbug area, which was also smooth and covered in 6" of pow. It was like a race course, there was no speed limit at all. The group I was skiing with was fun they are all from GMD and one of the laps I think we made 3 turns over about 1000' vert. Definitely the fastest I've ever skied. The whole mtn took about 5x longer to get tracked than it did in feb or march. Castle opened at noon for the first time in a week so it was skiing the deepest of anywhere on the mtn, probably 14" on the whole thing with deeper areas. I checked out a few new cliffs and a small spine line to air in the middle of a chute. no pics, too good of a day to mess with pics, and I've got a number of good ones already from the season. Overall, it was a spectacular late season day. It was bluebird all day and it stayed cold, highs at the top were in the low teens.

Cader, know what I would do with 7-8 days free to spend out west? I'd ski for a couple days (UT, CO, wherever) and then go on a four to five day Nat'l Park trip through Utah. Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, and more southern UT if you had time.
I'm saying this because I just got back from Canyonlands NP (and Arches, but I've been there before) outside of Moab and it's one of the coolest places I've ever seen. There's something about it that I just can't describe... similar to Arches and Bryce.
TR to come shortly, obviously.
