Remember reading someone post that to get the most out of skiing/riding in the SE you need to visit many different resorts.I couldn't agree more .I decided to head down to wintergreen for a 1/2 day from our massanutten condo.Made it over to the highlands and grabbed the first chair up.
Upper 20's clear ,no wind. Nice to go as fast as you want with no one around for a few runs.Upper cliffhanger.
Outer limits
Blue ridge express park view
Went over to the big acorn area around 10 .Still no tracks?
Finishing touches.
A few groomer cookies had rolled into the glades but still worthy of a few runs.
Nice to get out and ride with the sun shining on my back after all those -20 windchill days in West Virginia.

Which do you prefer? Massanutten or Wintergreen? I might be spending a weekend in Orange, VA (close to both resorts) soon and I'll have my afternoons free. I was thinking of skiing Massanutten Saturday afternoon and Wintergreen Sunday afternoon. The way I figure it, Massunutten will have lighter crowds and a halfday ticket on Saturday and Wintergreen will be on my way home Sunday. Is there anything else to consider? Crowds? Ski School/beginner terrain for the kids?

I have to give the overall nod to wintergreen for the high speed lifts and more advanced terrain. But on sundays from what I remember being a passholder there a few years ago the midweek value pass holders can use their pass starting at 12:30 pm on sundays and it can get crowded with the richmomd/charlottesville crowd on sun. afternoons. The highlands close at 4:15 and mass has the whole mountain open for night/twilight sessions though .I might do wtg sat and mass sunday as you can get a better discount with the ukrops card at mass on sundays($10 off 8 hr session)

wintergreen season passes kick in sunday afternoon so as a warning all the passholders show up at noon, making the place veryyy busy (at least this was the case last time i went there, and when i had a pass i did the same thing)
I would maybe consider going to WTG sat and mnut sun for that reason

How old are the kids? Ski or snowboard?
I like Massanutten better for beginner/intermediate terrain for kids. The ski school is quite good. Ages 7 and up can do 90-min clinics for $30 if full-day ski school is not of interest. I think the layout is better if kids are old enough to ski by themselves. At WTG, I'm not comfortable skiing the Highlands for long while the kids are on Dobie, and definitely not willing to let them go over to Big Acorn by themselves.
Mnut should clear out by 3pm. Perhaps earlier with the new beginner quad. At least, that's been my experience the last few years on MLK weekend.
Between the Highlands and ParaDice/DJ, assuming no lift line, I'd probably go for WTG if I weren't skiing with Marz Jr.

^Good info. My kids are 5 and 8. Thanks for reminding me for checking about ski schools' policies on the youngin'. It'll be her first time skiing.
I won't leave the 8 year old by herself but I can take turns with the wife so I'll have some time to hit up the Highlands or Paradice/DJ. I plan on doing them both.
ps. sorry Brook, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
